Sony Reports Defects in Its High-Class Qualia Digital Cameras
[Kyodo News International, Tokyo. Distributed by Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News.]
Kyodo News International via NewsEdge Corporation : Dec. 11—TOKYO—Sony Corp. said Thursday it is offering free repairs of ultracompact digital cameras in its Qualia series of high-class products because of defects in the electronic flash.

Subject to the free repairs are 133 made-to-order digital cameras sold for 380,000 yen in June through September, company officials said.

Since the end of October, specialist staff members have visited buyers to fix the defect, which may cause the electronic flash not to work once the shutter is pressed at a certain time, they said.

Minolta DiMAGE E323The Hungarian website Index Digicam have posted a review of the 3 megapixel DiMAGE E323 compact digital camera. Equipped with a 3X optical zoom, the DiMAGE E323 has a focal range of 5.6mm to 16.8mm, which is equivalent to a 36 - 108mm zoom on a 35mm camera. The maximum aperture of f/2.8 - 4.9 allows the camera to be used in less than ideal lighting conditions without the need of the flash. For those occasions requiring larger prints, the camera automatically resizes the captured data to create a 6-megapixel image. This allows the production of A3-size 150dpi prints or A4-size 300dpi prints.

Minolta DiMAGE A1DCResource have just published their review of the Minolta DiMAGE A1, which seems to have got a positive response from the photography world so far and is looking like a serious contender to the Sony DSC F-828.

“There’s a lot to like about the Minolta DiMAGE A1. It’s a worthy upgrade to the already-nice DiMAGE 7Hi, and it’s also one of the best “prosumer” cameras out there. The most important thing about a camera is photo quality, and the A1 does not disappoint, with photo quality that is competitive with the competition. Then there’s performance, where the A1 performs better than average, even in low lighting conditions.”

Pentax Optio 555Imaging Resource have completed their review of the Pentax Optio 555, a 5 megapixel updated version of the popular 550 model.

“Now, the Optio 555 broadens the line even further, with a 5.0-megapixel CCD and 5x zoom lens, in addition to a well-rounded feature set. It’s very similar in design and function to the Optio 550 model, but features a longer maximum shutter time (15 seconds) and movie recording limited only by the card capacity. (The Optio 550 had a maximum recording time of 10 minutes per movie clip.) The Optio 555 offers a lot of functionality and good image quality in a tidy little package.”

“The C-5060 Wide Zoom is one of the best Olympus cameras in recent memory, and it should be high on your shopping list if a full-featured 5 Megapixel camera is what you’re after. My main complaints about the camera are the above average noise levels at default settings (turning down the sharpness helps) and its intimidating user interface (buttons and menus). Everything else is good.”

Nikon Coolpix 5400CNET have reviewed one of Nikon’s top-of-the-range prosumer digital cameras, the 5 megapixel CoolPix 5400.

“The 5-megapixel Nikon Coolpix 5400 delivers numerous key improvements on the Coolpix 5000, including a 4X zoom lens, enhanced image quality, and revamped controls. Nikon also added 15 scene modes, making this model more accessible to casual snapshooters. But make no mistake: with its wealth of features and manual settings, the 5400 should appeal primarily to photo enthusiasts. We only wish that the camera offered longer battery life and RAW-file support.”

Pentax Optio 555CNET have completed their review of the Pentax Optio 555, a 5 megapixel updated version of the popular 550 model.

“Faster zooming and PictBridge compatibility are among the minor improvements that make the Optio 555 a bit better than its predecessor, the Optio 550. The 555 also shed a few ounces, so it’s attractive to amateur photographers who want features such as TIFF-file output, a 5X zoom lens, and manual controls in a relatively compact package. The Optio design doesn’t wow us now as it did when the 550 initially shipped, and much of the camera’s feature set has become more commonplace, but the 555 remains a solid 5-megapixel amateur model.”
