Contax TVSAt $899 for the champagne coloured model and $999 for the black version, the Contax TVS is firmly at the expensive end of the 5 megapixel compact digital camera market. Find out if the Contax TVS justifies its high price tag by reading Imaging Resource’s review.

“Overall, the TVS delivered good-looking photos, nice and sharp from corner to corner, thanks to its Zeiss lens. Color was generally accurate, and dynamic range was good. All in all, a very workmanlike performance with better than average lens quality.”

DCResource have spent a busy weekend reviewing two digital cameras, the Canon PowerShot SD100 (also known as the Digital IXUS II) and the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-U60.

“The SD100’s two trademark features are its size/design, and performance. The camera is small, all-metal, and easy to carry. The performance is excellent, from startup to shutter lag to shot-to-shot speed. The SD100 is a point-and-shoot camera with a few manual controls, but don’t expect to be manually setting the aperture or the focus.”

Steve’s Digicams has just reviewed the Kyocera Finecam L3v, a 3 megapixel digicam with a 2.5-inch colour LCD monitor and 3x optical zoom that retails for $399.

“If you’re looking for a small, pocketable and durable camera but have been reluctant to buy because all the others had tiny little LCD viewfinders, the Kyocera L3v may be just what you’ve been waiting for. The combination of a small, durable and a lightweight body with a large, brilliant LCD viewfinder is unique in the marketplace and justifies its $399 MSRP.”

Digital Camera Resource Page have also posted 2 new reviews in the last week. The HP Photosmart 935 is an easy-to-use digital camera aimed at the beginner, whilst the Pentax Option 550 is “a nice compromise between an ultra-compact and an ultra-zoom camera”.

“I must say that I was pleasantly surprised by the Pentax Optio 550. I really enjoyed using it. It’s pretty much the ultra-compact camera out there with a “big zoom” lens on it (though it’s only 5X). The photo quality was impressive, as were the performance, full manual controls, build quality, and battery life.”

Canon Powershot G5CNET have just reviewed the newest addition to Canon’s digital camera line-up, the Powershot G5.

“Although the G5’s black finish makes it look different from the silver G3, the two digicams offer nearly identical features and specs, including the same 4X zoom lens. Throw in the G5’s improved performance and generally great image quality, and you have a hard camera for photo enthusiasts to resist. Only a severe problem with purple fringing gives us pause.”

Minolta Dimage XtPhotexels have published their first ever review, taking an in-depth look at the Minolta Dimage Xt.

“The Minolta DiMAGE Xt is a well-built and beautifully crafted all-metallic ultra compact digital camera. Its target audience is those who desire a quality digital camera they can carry with them at all times. With its small dimensions and light weight, the Xt easily fits in a shirt pocket, a small fashion purse, or in the front pocket of a pair of jeans. An ingenious design that puts its 3x optical zoom lens inside the camera body means that there is no lens protrusion and gives the Xt its stunning flat design. “

Kodak EasyShare DX6340Imaging Resource have reviewed the Kodak EasyShare DX6340 3.1 megapixel digital camera which has an RRP of $329. Here’s a quote from the review:

“Overall, the DX6340 delivers the bright, vibrant color that’s characteristic of Kodak’s EasyShare camera line. Resolution is a bit lower than average for a three megapixel camera, but image noise levels are quite good, and there’s generally less geometric distortion in its images than I’m accustomed to seeing, no doubt thanks to the high-quality Schneider lens.”

“My pre-production camera isn’t going to win any awards for its autofocus. Locking focusing took longer than I would’ve liked—about a second. What really surprised me was how often it was unable to lock focus, even in good lighting. I’m hoping the production model will fare better.”

Quite a few websites are reporting today on another new digital camera from Toshiba, the PDR-3340, which isn’t quite as interesting as the PDR-M500 and PDR-M700 with their 10x optical zooms. The PDR-3340 has “a newly developed 3.2 megapixel CCD, 6x total zoom, AVI extended-play movie mode, and the convenience of a 16MB internal memory plus SD memory card compatibility up to 512MB”. It is due in the shops in August and will retail for $249.

Imaging Resource has followed up its recent review of the 5-megapixel Sony MVC-CD500 with a review of its 3.3 megapixel sibling, the MVC-CD350.

“While still significantly more expensive than competing flash memory-based three megapixel cameras with similar capabilities, the CD350 puts CD-based digital photography in reach of more people than ever before. Given the appeal of “infinite” storage via low-cost CD-R/RW discs, and the near-universal compatibility they offer for file exchange, I predict that the CD350 will be a popular model…”

Canon Powershot G5DCResource have just reviewed the newest addition to Canon’s digital camera line-up, the Powershot G5:

“I have posted a rather lengthy (by my standards, at least) review of the Canon PowerShot G5. While overall, the G5 is a very nice 5 Megapixel camera, I was disappointed with the level of purple fringing in my test photos. It also has the same redeye and “view of the lens barrel through the optical viewfinder” problems as the G3. Still, it’s well worth a look.”

Steve’s Digicams have reviewed Casio’s EXILIM EX-S3, a 3-megapixel digital camera that is less than 1/2 inch thick! If you’re looking for a camera that is the same size as a credit card, then look no further…

“Casio set the standard for “thin” cameras when they came out with the first Exilim EX-S1 and did it again with the EX-S2. Well, they’re back again, this time with the 3-megapixel EX-S3. This is definitely a pocket size camera and is much thinner than your wallet by far, in fact it’s only 11.7mm thick. It’s just amazing that there’s a high resolution imager, optical lens, rechargeable battery and a large 2-inch color all packed in this credit card-sized, stylish and durable metal body.”

Sony DSC-P10Imaging Resource have reviewed the 5-megapixel Sony DSC-P10, which was first announced back in February just before the PMA 2003 trade show.

”...is the P10, with a 5.0-megapixel CCD, 3x optical zoom lens, and an expanded range of seven preset Scene modes to choose from. The P10 offers a limited amount of exposure adjustments, but more than enough to adapt it to most common shooting situations, and the 3x zoom lens (with Macro mode) is great for recording a wide range of subjects, from close-up portraits to scenic vistas. Overall, a very functional camera with excellent image quality, in a tiny package.”
