Steves Digicams have today published their review of the 6 megapixel Nikon D70 DSLR.
“With the introduction of the D70, Nikon has redefined the amateur dSLR market. While Canon limited the features of its Digital Rebel to prevent competition with its own higher-end 10D, Nikon equipped the D70 with versatile features and equal or better shooting performance than its more costly D100. Nikon also included seven “Vari-Program” shooting modes that optimize camera settings for frequently found shooting conditions, addressing the needs of less-experienced users. The D70 is Nikon’s answer for amateur users of film-based SLR’s looking to move to digital, and for digital photographers who are tired of accommodating the limitations of consumer digicams.”

DCViews have just published their review of the 6 megapixel Nikon D70 DSLR.
“No doubt thanks to Nikon’s newly developed CCD imaging sensor, images show a wide dynamic range with ample detail in highlight and shadow areas. Resolution and sharpness are excellent even at higher ISO settings where there is low noise and good tonal balance. Colours on the D70 are neutral rather than saturated as is sometimes the case on other consumer models, but should you prefer a bit more punch this can be set in the relevant menu section by changing image parameters to vivid colour.”

Luminous Landscape have posted a comparison of the new 8 megapixel professional DSLR from Canon, the EOS 1D Mark II, and the new 8 megapixel prosumer digicam, the Powershot Pro. Is there really a $3,500+ difference in image quality?
“Here’s where things get interesting. On 10 X 15” prints on A3 paper the difference (meaning the Mark II’s resolution advantage) is still visible, but it is small. Experienced eyes can see it, but the lay person can’t. Show the prints together to a non-photographer and the question asked will be - “What differences am I looking for? The prints look very much the same.” Show them to a knowledgeable and fussy photographer and after a few moments of looking back and forth you hear - “Sure, this one (the Mark II) shows a bit better resolution, but wow, I’m surprised at how little the difference is.” And as for the slight shadow noise on the Pro1 image, it simply can’t be seen in a print, even at A3 size.”

Bob Atkins over at Photo.net has just posted his review of the Canon EOS 300D.
“The Digital Rebel is an excellent camera at a remarkably low price given the cost of other DSLRs. No doubt prices will drop further and cameras will improve over the next few years, but right now the Digital Rebel sets a price/performance standard that’s hard to beat. It’s clearly better and more versatile than similarly priced non SLR digicams in the same price range, though it may be slightly larger and you do have to buy lenses for it.”

Ken Rockwell has just published his review of the 6 megapixel Nikon D70 DSLR.
“Bravo, Nikon! The D70 eclipses every other DSLR under $3,000 because the D70 provides critical ease-of-use and speed, especially when it comes to the critical flash sync.
Image quality is unbeaten except possibly by the Canon 1D-II and 1Ds, but they cost five to eight times as much and weigh a ton.”

Another day, another Nikon D70 review :-) This time it’s the turn of Imaging Resource, who published their review of the 6 megapixel Nikon D70 DSLR yesterday.
“With the D70, Nikon apparently chose to go with a less aggressive antialiasing filter than in the D100, which produces the crisper-looking images, but also leaves it open to moire problems with repeating patterns. (This is probably the one aspect of the D70 that I found the most annoying, but on the whole, I’m personally willing to accept a very occasional moire problem for the increased sharpness that comes with it.) Comparing the D70’s images to those from the Canon cameras, the D70’s photos tend to look just slightly crisper…”

Professional photographer Thom Hogan has just published his review of the 6 megapixel Nikon D70 DSLR.
“If the Digital Rebel is a crippled 10D, the D70 is an enhanced D100! Love the meter, love the flash, like the improved controls and menus, not missing much of anything (realistically, only the missing mirror pre-release is a functional thing that I miss).”

Photo.net have today published their usual detailed review of the 6 megapixel Nikon D70 DSLR.
“Image quality on the D70 is excellent. Of particular note are the very low noise shadow details. In addition at higher ISO settings, while the noise starts to become observable, it is still not objectionable. Unlike many digital cameras, the Nikon D70 allows independent selection of image size, and quality in JPEG mode. With 3 image sizes, and 3 quality levels, there are a total of 9 possible JPEG settings.”

Professional wildlife photographer Moose Peterson has just published his review of the 6 megapixel Nikon D70 DSLR.
“Many are comparing the D70 with the D100, that’s only natural. They both have the same size 3008x2000 6.1MP CCD. I’ve found the D70 produces a slightly better file than the D100 but you’ll still find noise in a D70 image. It’s more noise than you’ll find in a D1X or D2H image of the same subject. But it’s really not a problem that can’t easily be taken care of using Dfine. I’ve made a couple of 20x prints from the D70 that look very nice.”

Bob Atkins has published a useful overview of the differences between the Canon EOS 10D and Canon EOS 300D digital SLRs, and tries to answer the question “Which one should you choose?”.
“Overall the 10D is a more professional camera, with features lacking on the digital Rebel (EOS 300D). Both use the same 6.3 megapixel size sensor, in fact they both probably use the same sensor, so assuming you use the same lens and the same exposure on both bodies, you should get images of equal quality. But of course you can say exactly the same thing about the Rebel and EOS 1v film bodies and there aren’t too many people torn for choice between those two!”

The US magazine Popular Photography have just published their review of the 6 megapixel Nikon D70 DSLR.
“Our first impression is that this camera is far more than a “light” version of the D100, as many have nicknamed Canon’s EOS Digital Rebel when compared to the more expensive EOS 10D. On the one hand, the D70’s durable body construction is similar to the D100 and Digital Rebel, with a stainless-steel chassis surrounded by a polycarbonate body, and a stainless-steel lensmount. It’s smaller and easier to grip than the D100, and, at 1.3 pounds, the D70 body weighs about the same as the Digital Rebel. But with a lens attached, the D70 feels more solid and well-balanced.”

Canon have released a new firmware version for the EOS 1Ds digital SLR camera.
EOS-1Ds Firmware Update Version 1.0.3 resolves the following issues:
Corrects the phenomenon of storage media with capacities greater than 2GB being recognized as having less than their full capacity after being formatted by the EOS-1Ds.
This firmware supports cameras with firmware Version 1.0.2 or earlier. If the camera already has the Version 1.0.3 firmware, this update is unnecessary.

DPReview have just published a comprehensive review of the 6 megapixel Nikon D70 DSLR.
“Shortly after Canon announced the EOS 300D (Digital Rebel) and it made its way into reviewers hands it was fairly clear that Canon were offering a formidable package at an excellent price which would be the mark for affordable digital SLR’s of the future, with image quality almost identical to the EOS 10D and a sub-$1000 price it caused a significant ripple in the market. Now however it’s clear that Nikon were well aware of this and had the D70 up their sleeve, a camera which is a significant step ahead of the EOS 300D in terms of build quality and feature set and a match, and in some instances better from an image quality point of view.”

Professional photographer Clint Thayer has today published a review of the 6 megapixel Nikon D70 DSLR.
“If you are use to shooting with a D100, you’ll immediately notice the acuity of which is revealed in your work. Almost too sharp is not an understatement. If you take your pictures in automatic mode, not only are the pictures sharp, but very contrasty and dynamic. This may be a good thing or a bad thing, depending on your preference of course. In any event, Nikon seemed to be aware of the “soft image” reputation of the D100, and responded with quite the opposite in this iteration.”
