Canon EOS 300DA-Digital-Eye have got hold of a production version of the Canon EOS 300D and have posted their first impressions of the camera, along with a large number of sample images.

“Overall, we found the camera performed wonderfully and the final image quality is very comparable to the Canon 10D. We like the slightly more saturated colors along with the overall look obtained as the outdoor white balance is excellent and metering was very accurate. The images we obtained still looked neutral and mostly similar to the great results many get with the 10D. We did note that in some situations the camera can slightly overexpose the picture by about 1/3 of an F-Stop, with slightly blown out whites in a few instances (which we also noted in the 10D).”

Nikon D2HNikon USA have announced prices for the new professional D2H DSLR and associated accessories. The D2H body only will retail for $3,999.00 - Imaging Resource has posted the complete price list.

Website: Imaging Resource - Nikon D2H Pricing

Meanwhile, Imaging Resource have removed the sample images that they posted at the weekend. Apparently the cameras that they were given to use by Nikon USA were very early pre-production samples and therefore not at all indicative of the final finished product.

“While I and the other journalists attending Nikon’s “Gravity Games” event were told that the cameras we were shooting with were “very close” to final production, I have since been informed that they were in fact much earlier-stage prototypes than we were initially told. Accordingly, Nikon has asked that I remove the images previously posted here until such time as final production-level units are available to test.

Apologies for the confusion over this, it appears that Nikon US was as much surprised by this as all of us are.”

Rob Galbraith’s website is reporting that Canan Canada have recently reduced the prices of several digital SLR cameras, “L” series lenses, teleconvertors and the 550ex Speedlite flash unit. The EOS 10D, EOS-1D and EOS-1Ds have all dropped in price by several hundred dollars. No similar price decreases have (yet?) been announced in the USA or the UK. Let me know if Canon have made a similar announcement in your part of the world…

Canon EOS 300DIf this thread over on the DP-Review forums is anything to go by, it seems that the Canon EOS 300D has started to ship and should be in your local store very soon. Well, at least if you live in the USA, anyway. The first post features the usual cat photos that all new digital camera owners seem to take :-) I’m awaiting the first “My 300D doesn’t focus properly” thread with baited breath…

Olympus E-1As part of their interactive preview of the new Olympus E-1 DSLR, DP-Now have just posted 7 sample images taken with a pre-production unit at a variety of different ISO speeds.

“A Zip archive of seven original E-1 images taken by me is now available for download.
The archive is 23MB and will take at least an hour to download using a typical dial-up connection, though rather more quickly over a broadband connection.
If the bandwidth hit is excessive, I can’t guarantee the download will remain available.
Please share your thoughts on the images once you have downloaded them here on this forum!”

Nikon D2HFollowing on from yesterday when digitalreview.ca published 3 sample images from the Nikon D2H digital SLR, Imaging Resource have joined in and posted around 24 new sample photos. There are also some erly observations about how this new DSLR handles.

“The one fly in the ointment, at least in terms of the sample photos I’ve posted, is that the prototype cameras I and several others were playing seemed to have very high image noise levels, particularly in shadow areas. This came as quite a surprise, since Nikon made a particular point of the low-noise characteristics of their new proprietary LBCAST sensor technology.”

Canon EOS 300DDigital Outback Photo are currently testing the Canon EOS 300D with the EF-S 18-55mm lens. They have started to publish their review in the form of a diary, so make sure to check back for their latest thoughts.

“In terms of the camera features the Rebel is very basic and looks cheap (e.g. silver body). But handling and build quality is much better than this might sound. You cannot save weight, size and money and still expect a professional camera. We will actually buy a 300D as a backup camera.”

Olympus E-1DP-Now have started an interactive preview of the new Olympus E-1 DSLR. The preview takes a look first at the Four Thirds system and its perceived advantages and disadvantages.

“The subject for this first interactive feature is a detailed hands-on preview of the soon to be released and much-heralded Olympus E-1 digital SLR. I recently spent three days with Olympus representatives, including engineers from Japan learning about the philosophy behind the Four Thirds platform, the Olympus E-System and the first camera to adopt those philosophies, the E-1…

...This feature is, essentially a distillation of what I learned during those three days, backed up by some 300 or so pictures I shot during my time with the camera.”

Pentax *ist DThe UK digital photogrphy website ePhotoZine have quietly published a full review of the Pentax *ist D, which is due to hit the high street very soon. Can the new *ist D compete with the more well-established DSLRs like the Canon EOS 10D, Fuji S2 and Nikon D100? Find out in ePhotoZine’s review…

“Overall the Pentax *ist D offers a level of image quality similar to other six megapixel digital SLRs available, which is good considering this is Pentax’s first production Digital SLR to reach the market. We received the camera with the kit 18-35mm lens and used a 24-90mm we had in the office too. The 18-35mm provides a useful wide-angle and for around ?100 extra over the body-only price is not bad value. In comparison to the 24-90mm it is slightly softer at 24mm but does provide that 6mm more wide-angle coverage. One advantage it has over most other wide-angle lenses is it is very lightweight making the combination of this lens and the *ist D a good travel companion.”

The Slovenian digital photography website e-Fotografija have recently reviewed the Canon EOS 300D, Pentax *ist D and the Olympus E-1 DSLRs. They are also testing those cameras with various lenses, which will be published in a few days time. Unfortunately everything is in Slovenian (naturally); they are currently looking for a slovenian-english translator to publish the site in English. Fortunately, there are a lot of sample images to look at from all 3 cameras.

Olympus E-1Following on from DP-Now’ editor Ian Burley’s hands-on test of the Olympus E-1 DSLR, sports photographer Dave Kennedy has published his early impressions after he tired out a beta version of the camera at the US Open tennis tournament.

“The image quality and size are great. When you open the files in Photoshop they are 14.1mb. Larger than the Canon 1D & Nikon D1H jpeg files. The files looked really good (but again I only shot this on 100 ASA and not at a higher setting). The color was great, skin tones looked good and there seemed to be a good amount of lattitude to work with the files.”

Olympus E-1DP-Now’s editor Ian Burley has just returned from a trip to Majorca to test out the new Olympus E-1 DSLR (what a great life journalists lead!). Ian has added a hands-on report of the E-1 on the DP-Now forums, with a full preview due later this week.

Here’s an interesting snippet of information to whet your appetite:

“The Four Thirds standard, around which the E-System is based, relates to the old Videcon picture tube sizing standard and the key dimension to note is the sensor diagonal of 22.3mm. We were told that this means that cameras could be developed with sensors of any aspect ratio a manufacturer desired, including square format, as long as the sensor diagonal remained 22.3mm. So the Four Thirds standard name is not tied to the 4:3 aspect ratio that the E-1 has adopted.”

Canon EOS 300DIt’s all happening this morning! Not content with giving you the UK prices for the Olympus E-1 and Pentax *ist D (which I still have trouble typing), there is now the very first user review of the Canon EOS 300D to report! It’s brought to you by Vic Icasas, a photographer from the Philippines, who has had access to the 300D for the last week. He’s written a pretty thorough review, together will sample photos, and posted it on the MAC community site PhilMUG (I’m not sure why he posted it there…). You will have to register with PhilMUG to read the review - to be honest I was quite surprised to find the whole site still up and running! :-) (via Luminous Landscape).

“I usually look to Phil Askey (aka “God” for many digital photographers) at dpreview when it comes to the ultimate, definitive last word on digital cameras, but in this case I seem to be in the enviable position of having had unrestricted access to Canon’s latest digital SLR in the last week or so while Phil has yet to release his impressions. In fact, as of this writing, I believe I may just be the first person in the world to release an online review of this camera, right here on PhilMUG!”

Brace yourselves for the news that all Olympus and Pentax film SLR owners have been waiting for (and plenty of other people too!). Both companies yesterday confirmed the prices for their new DSLRs, the Olympus E-1 and Pentax *ist D. So without any further ado, here are those prices…

Olympus E-1 Prices
- E-1 digital camera ?1,408.83 including VAT
[Including battery, charger, cable and strap]
- E-1 digital camera kit ?1,820.08 including VAT
[ Including 14-54mm F2.8-3.5 lens, battery, charger, cable and strap]

Lenses including VAT
- EZ-1454 Digital Lens 14-54mm F2.8-3.5 [including lens hood and case] ?495.85
- EM-P5020 Digital Lens ED 50mm F2 Macro [including lens hood and case] ?390.10
- EZ-5020 Digital Lens ED 50-200mm F2.8-3.5 [including lens hood and case] ?779.03
- ET-P3028 Digital Lens ED 300mm F2.8 [including lens hood and case] ?5,318.05
- EC-14 Tele Converter x 1.4 [for 14-54, 50-200 and 300mm] ?353.68
- EX-25 Extension Tube 25mm ?105.75

Pentax *ist D Prices
- Pentax *ist D camera body ?1400 including VAT
- Pentax *ist D camera body with smc 18-35mm f/4-5.6 FA AL J lens ?1529.99
- Pentax *ist D camera body with smc 28-80mm f/3.5-5.6 FA AL J lens ?1499.99
- Pentax *ist D camera body with smc 20-35mm f/4 FA AL lens ?1899.99
- Pentax *ist D camera body with smc 24-90mm f/3.5-4.5 FA AL lens ?1799.99

Now in my humble opinion, these prices seem a little high when you consider that the Canon EOS 10D retails for around ?1150-300 body only. And lets not even mention the sub-?1000 EOS 300D! It will be very interesting to see how many E-1s and *ist Ds Olympus and Pentax sell at their recommend retail price; how soon will it be before prices become more competitive? This is less of a problem for the E-1, as it’s a whole new camera system aimed at the advanced amateur/professional photographer, but the Pentax *ist D is aimed at a similar market to the EOS 300D, and there’s currently a whopping ?500 price difference between the two cameras (body-only).

Brace yourselves for the news that all Olympus and Pentax film SLR owners have been waiting for (and plenty of other people too!). Both companies yesterday confirmed the prices for their new DSLRs, the Olympus E-1 and Pentax *ist D. So without any further ado, here are those prices… Olympus…

Canon has linked together 50 digital cameras in a world first to ‘freeze’ time during a cinema-photographic action sequence. Fifty EOS 300D digital SLR cameras were used in a technique known as ‘Time Slicing’ or ‘Bullet Time’, a practice which shot to prominence when used to shoot the fight sequences for the film ‘The Matrix’. The results of Time Slicing mean film and television audiences are given the impression of moving around an action sequence which is frozen in time. Until now this technique has relied on the use of analogue film cameras.

Time Slicing with the EOS 300D was first shown to the public at Canon’s European launch of the EOS 300D, held at London’s exclusive venue, Sketch. Within moments of being photographed inside the rig, celebrities and guests were able to view footage of themselves broadcast onto giant plasma screens around the venue.

There are a few sample photos taken with the new EF-S 18-55mm lens, and some early observations about the general handling of the camera. Essential reading for everyone who has pre-ordered the 300D!

“The Digital Rebel with the new EF-S 18-55mm lens feels light. This is meant in a positive sense that you want to carry this camera more often with you than a 10D or even a 1Ds.

The time today was way to short to find out about the quality of the new EF-S 18-55mm lens. But as far as we can see in these sample shots this is a very useable lens.”
