Shutterbug have published a review of the Nikon D50, a new affordable 6.1 megapixel digital SLR.
“Small and lightweight for a Nikon digital SLR, the D50 resembles its larger sibling in many respects. (The switch from CompactFlash to Secure Digital cards is one reason for the smaller size.) The body is comfortable to hold thanks to the large handgrip and sports fewer analog controls for a “less complicated” appearance. Although not as rugged as the D70s, the camera feels solid, with very good build quality. All buttons and dials are well-marked, logically located, and easy to find. There’s no depth of field preview for evaluating the range of acceptable sharpness at various apertures, a problem for serious photographers in macro, nature, landscape, and other image making.”

DIWA member Steves Digicams has the first online review of the Pentax *ist DS2 digital SLR camera. The Pentax DS2 is virtually identical to the existing *ist DS, adding a larger, higher-resolution 2.5 inch color LCD monitor.
“The *ist DS2’s default Image Tone setting of Bright produced well-saturated images right out of the camera. Colors were natural, but a bit soft; most users will prefer a hard sharpness setting, or the application of an image editor’s unsharp mask filter. The image noise was practically non-existant at ISO 200, at ISO 400 it’s still very clean, and at ISO 800 shadow noise becomes noticeable. At ISO 1600 noise becomes noticeable in highlights, but the images are quite usable. I would use ISO 3200 only if it made the difference between capturing an image or not. While noise is present at the higher ISO settings, the *ist DS2 compares favorably in this respect with the high-end prosumer digicams that overlap its price range.”

PCMagazine have reviewed the Olympus E-500, an 8 megapixel DSLR with a 2.5 inch LCD screen in a body with a classic penta-prism design.
“With so many digital camera manufacturers offering inexpensive digital SLRs, consumers have a lot of options to choose from. The overall quality is generally very high, but careful testing can detect subtle differences. Although our tests turned up some small issues with image quality and performance, we found the 8-megapixel Olympus Evolt E-500 to be a very good camera, but one that still falls shy of unseating our present entry-level D-SLR Editors’ Choice, the Nikon D50.”

TrustedReviews have published a review of the Nikon D50, a new affordable 6.1 megapixel digital SLR.
“Where money has been saved is by shaving off additional features that most amateur photographers won’t even miss, such as wireless flash control, viewfinder composition grid, the backlight in the LCD display, and the ability to fine-tune white balance settings. The result is a camera that is much easier to use. There have been a few minor performance sacrifices, for instance the D50 has a maximum shutter speed of 1/4000th sec, against the D70’s 1/8000th, and a continuous shooting mode that fires 2.5 frames a second as opposed to the D70’s 3fps, but even so it is no way inadequate. Any keen amateur photographer will find that the D50 can provide all the creative control they are looking for.”

Imaging Resource have reviewed the Olympus E-500, an 8 megapixel DSLR with a 2.5 inch LCD screen in a body with a classic penta-prism design.
“Now, the EVOLT E-500 improves on its predecessor, offering the same eight-megapixel CCD, but expanding its exposure options to include more advanced bracketing and metering modes, a larger 2.5-inch LCD monitor, the ability to accept xD-Picture Cards, and a longer maximum exposure time. Many functions and features are the same as on the E-1 and E-300, including the unique “Supersonic Wave” filter that literally shakes dust off of the sensor’s front filter, addressing a common problem with digital SLRs and the wide range of automatic and manual exposure modes. The new E-500 also comes in a dual lens kit package, featuring the ZUIKO DIGITAL 14-45mm and 40-150mm lenses.”

Camera Labs have reviewed the new entry-level Konica Minolta Dynax 5D digital SLR camera.
“The 5D’s built-in Anti-Shake is a truly valuable feature which genuinely works. Like similar technologies it won’t perform miracles, but you really are looking at a two to three stop advantage when handholding. This allows you to handhold shots at exposures two to three times slower than normal, thereby allowing you to shoot under dimmer conditions without worrying about camera shake or being forced to increase the ISO and compromise quality. The fact you get this built-in for roughly the same price as rival budget digital SLRs is remarkable. The bundled 18-70mm lens also has a longer and more useful range than the usual 18-55mm lenses bundled with its rivals.”

Popular Photography have published their review of the 12.8 megapixel Canon EOS 5D digital SLR.
“Canon’s New EOS 5D DSLR ($3,300 street, body only) is a study in the yin and yang of camera design. On the one hand, its 12.8MP full-frame CMOS sensor eliminates the 35mm lens factor found on all lower-priced DSLRs and gives it a potential image-quality edge. On the other hand, it costs more than twice as much as the 8.2MP EOS 20D ($1,300 street) from which it was cloned, and it’s missing a few of the 20D’s features. So you might ask, if the EOS 5D takes a picture in the woods and nobody hears it, does it make a sound purchase? Put simply, yes. Which is why we made it our 2005 Camera of the Year.”

DIWA member Steves Digicams have reviewed the Olympus E-500, an 8 megapixel DSLR with a 2.5 inch LCD screen in a body with a classic penta-prism design.
“The E-500’s 8-megapixel imager offers plenty of resolution, an advantage over its 6-megapixel competitors both for producing large prints and high-quality cropped images. The E-500’s results were well-exposed, and color reproduction was realistic. The E-500’s image quality was very good at ISO 100 and 200. At higher ISO’s, noise becomes evident; while 400 is very usable, noise becomes evident in shadow and midtone areas at ISO 800, and there’s noise throughout the image at ISO 1600 as well as very noticeable reduction in image detail.”

ePhotoZine have reviewed the new entry-level Konica Minolta Dynax 5D digital SLR camera.
“The Dynax 5D has an innovative feature that was first introduced on Konica Minolta’s consumer digital cameras such as the A1 and Z3 and its big brother, the 7D. Where other brands incorporate a camera shake reduction system in their lenses, this one is built in to the camera so all the lenses of the existing Dynax range will work with it. You can turn this on or off as you please with the switch on the rear and when on you see what can only be described as a small bar graph on the bottom right of the viewfinder display.”

DigitalCameraInfo have published their review of the Canon EOS-1D Mark II N digital SLR camera, an upgrade of the EOS-1D Mark II, principally offering a larger frame burst on both JPEG and RAW mode and increasing the size of the LCD monitor to 2.5 inches.
“The EOS-1D Mark II n is a heck of a lot of camera—and at $4,000, it had better be. We can judge its value in a few ways, but any way you slice it, this camera is a strong buy. First, we can compare it to the competition: for $500 more than the Nikon D2Hs, it delivers a faster shooting rate and twice as many pixels. The Nikon autofocus system seemed to handle some low-contrast subjects better, but not conclusively so. Comparatively, the 1D Mark II n seems like a great value. “

DIWA member Steves Digicams have published their review of the 12.8 megapixel Canon EOS 5D digital SLR.
“The bottom line is always image quality, and the 5D does not disappoint with its combination of 12.8-megapixel resolution, full-frame image sensor and low image noise. The 5D is capable of producing images rivalling the quality of the professional 1DS Mark II. Most pro’s will opt to shoot in RAW mode, using software tools to adjust for the desired degree of sharpness, saturation and contrast. But the 5D also produces high-quality finished JPEG images courtesy of its Picture Styles. While image noise is noticeable in midtone and shadow areas at sensitivities over ISO 800, ISO 1600 and 3200 produce very usable images.”

DPReview have published their review of the 12.8 megapixel Canon EOS 5D digital SLR.
“The EOS 5D is a fantastic photographic tool which is capable of producing really excellent results. The caveat is that it takes a little more care and understanding of your equipment (especially lenses). We found resolution to be absolutely excellent with crisp detailed results straight from the camera (JPEG) and even more detail available if you shoot RAW. Different ‘looks’ can be easily achieved via Picture Styles (almost like changing film) and the range of in-camera image parameters has been expanded. Noise levels are essentially identical to the EOS 20D as is dynamic range, this is neither a surprise or a disappointment, it simply means consistency and the maintaining of an expectation built by Canon in the performance of its CMOS sensor.”
