DIWA member Steves Digicams have published their initial impressions of the 8 megapixel Canon EOS 350D / Digital Rebel XT DSLR camera.
“It Many of the feature advancements and innovations on the EOS Digital Rebel XT digital camera are inherited from its EOS 20D “prosumer big brother.” Both cameras employ a Canon 8-megapixel, high resolution color CMOS image sensor, and provide the same effective angle of view, equivalent to 1.6 x the normal EF lens focal length. The consumer looking only at the fact that they are both 8-megapixel SLRs might not easily see the real differences between these two cameras. The 20D offers faster continuous shooting (5 frames-per-second (fps) vs. 3 fps) with a larger burst capability (23 frames vs. 14), more custom settings (18 vs. 9) and a rugged magnesium body. The Rebel XT was created for those migrating to digital that don’t want to lose the power or flexibility of a SLR system, but can’t justify the $600 higher price of the EOS 20D.”

Photo.net have published their initial impressions of the 8 megapixel Canon EOS 350D / Digital Rebel XT DSLR camera.
“It looks very much like the image quality of the Digital Rebel XT is up to that of the EOS 20D. It’s also evident from using the Digital Rebel, that it’s a Rebel, i.e. a camera aimed at the consumer entry level, while the 20D is clearly aimed at the more experienced and serious photographer. Ultimately in many respects the cameras will be capable of yielding almost identical results, it’s just that doing it with the 20D will be a little easier. Of course there are things the Digital Rebel doesn’t do as well. It has a slower frame rate, a smaller JPEG image buffer, a lower capacity battery, the AF system is different and, as mentioned, the viewfinder is smaller. However for many people saving $400-$500 will make up for all those things. Personally, I’d buy the 20D, but that’s just me. Many people will buy the Digital Rebel XT and be very happy with it.”

Photographer Petteri Sulonen has published an extremely detailed guide to cleaning the sensor of a digital SLR camera using cheaper alternatives to commercial sensor cleaning brushes.
“On the other hand, there’s a far greater variety of artist’s brushes in the right material, shape, and size available. Go to any halfway-decent art-supply store, and look for synthetic brushes. You’ll find easily a half-dozen varieties that look approximately right. The trouble is, in all the art stores I visited, the bristles are always sized together for transport. For an artist this doesn’t matter, since the size dissolves when you dip it in water—but for this purpose, it’s extremely important to get all the size out, not just most of it. This is certainly possible, but an unsized brush is clearly preferable to one with size in it.”

Imaging Resource have published a brief user report on the new 8 megapixel Canon EOS 350D / Digital Rebel XT DSLR camera.
“Now, I’ve placed this camera into the hands of several women, and they all love it. I can see why, as several of the women who have smaller hands have no trouble finding a comfortable home for their thumb, palm, and fingers; just like it was made for them. Even my wife, whose hands aren’t that much smaller than mine, really liked the grip, and the Digital Rebel XT’s light weight, button arrangement, and overall feel were just right (she was fairly familiar with our Digital Rebel, by the way, so this is an informed opinion).”

Digital Outback Photo have published a review of the new 12 megapixel Nikon D2X digital SLR by reader Laurin Rinder.
“As soon as I could charge the batteries [101 min each] I shot every thing I could for 10 solid days and nights. Approx. 5000 images , Just for speed sake everything was shot on JPEG/FINE mode. I figured if it wasn’t good at this setting then what’s the use. I don’t shoot RAW and really cant figure out why anybody does unless you cant get it right the first time or, you love to twiddle on your computer. According to nikon there is a 4x loss in image quality shooting JPEG, I have yet to see the difference between the two file formats, if I shot raw it would take me forever to process the volume of work I must do daily. Just don’t ever save anything as a JPEG, work on it then save as a tiff.”

CNET have posted their review of the new 8 megapixel Olympus E-300 / Evolt DSLR.
“As with the more pro-oriented Olympus E-1, the E-300 conforms to the Four-Thirds standard for interchangeable-lens dSLRs, which in theory guarantees interoperability between cameras and lenses from any manufacturer that adopts it in the future. With the E-300 kit, Olympus starts you out with a 14mm-to-45mm, f/3.5-to-f/5.6 zoom lens (28mm-to-90mm in 35mm-equivalent terms), and the camera offers a satisfactory feature set, crisp performance, and good build quality for the price.”

Nikondigital.org have published their review of the new 12 megapixel Nikon D2X digital SLR (found via digicamera.net).
“What I found was that I’d really purchased 2 cameras in 1. When used in its normal full-resolution mode the D2X is suitable for the most demanding architectural and landscape applications. Used either in the full resolution or high-speed crop mode it makes a great wildlife and sports camera. The ability to quickly shift to 8 frames per second and a tighter 6.8 mega-pixel crop with the twist of a dial is like having a 1-click Teleconverter always with you. Sure, I know it is really just pixel magic and I could crop the same way in Photoshop, but this way I get the faster frame rate and don’t have to waste time with a large image workflow when I don’t need it. I’d prefer the feature was a little easier to get to, as the “function” button in the lower front of the camera is a little hard to reach while you turn the command dial, but it’s still a piece of cake compared to adding a teleconverter.”

Luminous Landscape have published their review of the new 8 megapixel Canon EOS 350D / Digital Rebel XT DSLR.
“Let me put this as delicately as possible. The viewfinder of the 350XT is small. How small? Very small. It is one of the smallest viewfinders that I’ve ever seen. As Mike Johnston put it in a recent column, when talking about the small viewfinders that we are seeing in the latest generation of reduced frame and reduced cost DSLRs, it’s like looking at a postage stamp at the end of a tunnel. Having said that, it’s still better than any electronic viewfinder that I’ve ever seen. These are like looking at a fuzzy TV at the end of a long tunnel. “

DPReview have just posted their review of the Fuji FinePix S3 Pro digital SLR.
“The S3 Pro’s unique selling feature, its extended dynamic range, really does exist and does work. We measured up to 10 stops of dynamic range in the camera’s “Wide 2” mode, however it’s seldom that this would be obvious in everyday shots. The reason for this is that in wide dynamic range mode you get the gain only in the highlights, it would have made sense to instead have the option of a completely different tone curve and expose for shadows to spread the additional dynamic range across the tonal scale rather than just in highlights (we often don’t mind clipped highlights as long as the roll-off is smooth).””

Imaging Resource have published their initial hands-on impressions of the new Nikon D2X digital SLR.
“If first impressions still hold value, the Nikon D2x seems likely to be a winner. Frankly, before shooting with the D2x, I was concerned about Nikon’s position in the high-end camera market. The D70 was a great camera for consumers, and a fine answer to competitors’ offerings, but in the pro arena they’ve clearly lagged somewhat in the last year or two. I think the D2x brings them right back into contention with a pro camera that’s not only rugged, good looking, and high quality, but that excels where it counts: image quality.”

Digital Outback Photo have just started a diary review of the new 8 megapixel Canon EOS 350D DSLR.
“Clearly the 300D maybe attractive for people on a budget but otherwise it would be worth to spend $200 more for the new 350D. Not really because the XT has more megapixels but because the XT is a newer design and is also more reactive.
This leaves many photographers with the decision 20D or 350D. The key difference between these two cameras is the size and weight. The XT is a very small DSLR (only tiny bit larger than the Pentax *ist) and the 20D looks rather big compared to it.”
