Nikon UK today announced its plan to open the Nikon School in London. A new training course programme will be launched to coincide with the opening of the Nikon School and will include a range of courses from “Introduction to Photography”, to more advanced product specific courses. Customers are encouraged to visit the dedicated training website to book courses, which run from April.

London Camera Exchange (LCE) has announced the opening of a new store in Manchester.  Having acquired the large centrally located premises, previously part of the Jacobs chain of camera stores, the new LCE store will be opening on 26th February. Sports Illustrated photographer David Bergman and Josh Lehrer have created a zoomable 3.8-gigapixel photograph during Super Bowl XLVII. In February, 2013, sixty years after its founding, Aperture Foundation will relaunch its flagship publication Aperture. “The award-winning London designers A2/SW/HK have re-envisioned the magazine as a luxurious print object defined by its tactile presence, dynamic typography unique to Aperture, and high-quality reproductions,” the publisher says. “Each quarterly issue will feature at least 50% more pages and will be reformatted to a larger trim size.” The Aperture Spring 2013 issue hits newsstands February 26, 2013.

With support from the European Commission, the Dutch FotoMuseum Provincie Antwerpen (FoMu) has embarked on a new photographic heritage project called Daguerreobase. The project’s goal is to collect copies and descriptions of over 25.000 historical daguerrotypes from all over Eurotype in a single database / knowledge bank. “European-style daguerreotypes are scarce and collections are scattered around in several European institutional and private collections,” the museum explained in a statement. “The renewed Daguerreobase aims not only to aggregate and to centralise the [available] information about these collections, it will also make this information open to researchers and professionals [as well as] the general public.” For more information, visit the website below.

The Székesfehérvár organisation of the Society for Military and Civil Cooperation and the Interspect Research Team have partnered to create the world’s highest-resolution aerial ortho image mosaic. Putting Google Earth to shame, the record-breaking aerial image mosaic shows the Pákozd Military Memorial Park from above, in stunning detail. Prior to creating the photographs, the young Hungarian researchers had developed bespoke image sensors and special methods for making aerial images from fast-moving aircraft. “The enthusiastic team has been involved in development of the idea of a high spatial resolution ortho image mosaic since 2006,” the Society said in a statement. “They had to overcome many obstacles to be the first in the world to make a subpixel orthophoto mosaic with details smaller than half a centimetre from a high speed aircraft.” To view the image, visit the website below.

Canon Canada has announced the opening of Image Square, the Canon Experience Centre - a unique destination where visitors can interact with the latest Canon technology. Located at Eighth Avenue Place in downtown Calgary, Alberta, Canon Image Square is a “technologically-advanced space specifically designed to encourage exploration and discovery,” the company says. Occupying approximately 6,600 square feet, Canon Image Square is accessible off 8th Avenue as well as through the building’s main concourse.

National Geographic has released a stunning slow-motion video capturing every nuance of a sprinting cheetah’s movements, with the animal running at top speeds of 60+ miles per hour. Working in co-operation with the Cincinnati Zoo and drawing on the skills of a Hollywood action movie crew, the National Geographic team used a Phantom camera capable of shooting at 1200 frames per second to film the movements of the magnificent feline. An exceptionally rare photographic album of Ethiopian images is to be auctioned in the Travel & Photography, India and Beyond sale at Bonhams in London on 4th December. This particular album, estimated to sell for £600-800 covers, upwards of 180 views and portraits taken in Ethiopia including a number of self portraits of the intriguing character Captain Tristram Charles Sawyer Speedy(1836-1910) who learned to speak Amharic and adopted native dress. Another interesting lot going under the hammer is an exceptionally rare set of photographic albums of Java in the Dutch East Indies by the pioneering Victorian photographers, Walter Woodbury and James Page. The two volumes with some 60 topographical views and portraits in Java, mostly around Batavia, are estimated to sell for between £10,000-15,000.
