FOllowing on from the recent article at Petteri’s Pontifications which compared various 50mm lenses in Canon’s lens line-up, Photo.net has published a very similar article which compares the Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 and the f/1.8 MK II lenses.

“Is there any difference between these 2 lenses other than the price and f-stop? This is a common question that pops up frequently on forums everywhere. While the general consensus is that these 2 lenses are almost identically sharp, there are other factors that have not been fully explained or readily available. And there are lots of wordy discussions but hardly any picture to illustrate. Since I happened to have a new f1.4 together with my old f1.8, I decided to do some tests to find out the answers myself.”

Petteri’s Pontifications has an interesting report on the various 50mm lenses in Canon’s lens line-up, which is of particular interest to Canon 10D owners, who tend to buy a cheap 50mm as one of their first lenses. Find out which particular 50mm lens you should buy by reading Petteri’s new report.

“Fifties are cult lenses. There’s probably more variety in Fifties than any other prime. This is a shoot-out between two of Canon’s best: the long-discontinued 50/1.8 Mk I and the top-of-the-line (now that the 1.0L’s discontinued too) 50/1.4 USM.”

Canon 17-40mm f/4LThis will be of interest to all new or prospective Canon 10D owners looking for a wide-angle lens. Michael Reichmann has reviewed the new Canon 17-40mm f/4L lens, which at $800 may be the default wide-angle solution for the richer 10D owner. That counts me out, especially as I’m happy enough with my Canon 20-35mm f/3.5-4.5 USM lens.

“Are these two lens samples representative? I can’t say for sure. I’ve been using my 16-35mm f/2.8L for many months and have been happy with the images it produces. Is it as sharp as primes in this focal length range? No, of course not. But it is very versatile, and I don’t hesitate to use it in demanding situations. The new 17-40mm f/4L is a welcome surprise though. At nearly half the price of the faster and slightly wider 16-35mm f/2.8L it provides excellent image quality, surpassing that of the more expensive lens in several areas.”
