Steve McCurry has been inducted into the SanDisk Extreme Team Legends programme. This programme honours photographers who have made major contributions to the art of photography during their careers. McCurry was inducted into the programme during National Geographic’s 125th anniversary event in Øksnehallen, Copenhagen. At the event, more than 110 photographs taken by some of National Geographic’s most prestigious photographers were featured. Most notably, McCurry’s “Afghan Girl” image, which appeared on the magazine’s cover in 1985, and has since become one of the most recognised magazine covers of all time.

Panasonic has announced a number of seminars being held this weekend with Hugh Hastings, the former Official Photographer for Chelsea FC. Held at Jessops London Oxford Street store on Saturday 20th and Sunday 21st July, at 11am and 3pm, these sessions will cover Hugh's photography career and current work, working with the Chelsea Football Club, and reasons for Hugh's switch from a DSLR to the Panasonic GH2 and GH3 (pictured). Singapore-based photographer Aram Pan has created what must be the world's first spherical panoramic image shot on a Hasselblad Lunar. Having produced commercial VRs in Singapore, China, Greece, Indonesia, Israel, Jordan, Malaysia and Thailand; professional virtual-tour photographer Aram Pan used a Zeiss Touit Distagon T* 12mm f/2.8 lens on his newly purchased, US$6995 Hasselblad Lunar camera to shoot the source frames needed for the 360° panoramic image of Singapore Botanic Gardens, which can be viewed at the website below.

Lomography UK’s July exhibition, opening this Thursday, will feature work from analogue photographer, Richard Heeps. In his Man’s Ruin collection, Heeps explores retro Americana imagery in vibrant, immediate photos. Working largely with rare, end-of-line films, Heeps travelled the US, capturing this collection on his Mamiya RB67 and Nikon FM2 cameras. Tiwani Contemporary will host an exhibition by South African photographer Gideon Mendel entitled, Drowning World. The selection includes 15 images taken in Nigeria that have never been exhibited before, and 5 photographs documenting flooding in various parts of the globe including England, India, Haiti and Australia. The exhibition also presents a two-part video of people living amidst floodwaters in Bangkok, as well as video portraits of Nigerian inhabitants returning to their flooded homes. Drowning World will run from 7 June – 27 July 2013.

Think Tank Photo today launched “About A Photograph,” a free video series that features some of the world’s leading photographers recounting the stories behind their most famous photos. The series is being produced by Kurt Rogers and Deanne Fitzmaurice, Think Tank Photo’s co-founders and award-winning photojournalists. “When we photojournalists go out on assignment we never know what awaits us,” said Rogers. “It is through our training as experts in sensing when and where events will unfold that we are able to capture images that best convey the story.” The series can be found at the website below.

A new exhibition at the New-York Historical Society, Children With AIDS: Spirit and Memory, will feature 20 black-and-white photographs by noted photographer and social realist Claire Yaffa from her collection “The Changing Face of Children with AIDS. " Yaffa, whose photographs have been featured in The New York Times and other major publications, has worked for years to document medical institutions and their youngest patients. Among the institutions that Yaffa worked with during her long artistic career is the Incarnation Children’s Center in the Bronx, one of the first organizations to care for orphaned infants born with HIV. Installed in the Civil Rights Gallery from 7 June through 15 September 2013, the mid- to large-format photographs, taken from 1990-2000, reveal heartbreaking tales of children afflicted with HIV and AIDS.

The second edition of the New Wave Photography exhibition was shown 19 - 27 April at the Crypt Gallery in London. The exhibition presented over fifty works by photographers from the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia, attracting a large number of visitors, including Londoners and tourists, art enthusiasts, collectors, businessmen and students. Over 2,000 people have seen the show, many of whom have left with a piece by their favourite artist. The photographers whose works were on display included five Hungarians (Réka Kóti, Sarolta Bán, Benedek Bognár, Zoltán Békefy and Miroslav Zselinsky), three Polish artists (Maciej Boksa, Przemysław Kuciński and Pawel Piotrowski), three Czechs (Martin Hruška, Lucie Jestrabikova and Karel Vojkovský) and Veronika Otepková from Slovakia.

Blitz: WWII in London is an upcoming exhibition of vintage photographs from the 1940s, going on display on 31st May in the Daniel Blau gallery in London. The Blitz lasted from 7 September 1940 to 21 May 1941. In this time, Germany attacked London 71 times, rendering more than 1.4 million people homeless. The main air offensive against British cities diminished after May 1941, but sporadic and lethal raids continued for several more years, with the V-1 and V-2 rockets deployed between 1944 and 1945 killing nearly 9,000 civilians. Olympus UK have made their partnership with multi-award-winning photographer Damian "Big Dog" McGillicuddy all official. It is no secret that Olympus and Damian McGillicuddy have been working together very closely over the last 12 months, beginning at Focus 2012 with the launch of the OM-D. Over the past 12 months Damian has been working on Olympus UK’s behalf - testing their latest equipment, running courses and shooting the photographs that Olympus have been using to advertise the OM-D. He also worked with Olympus at Focus 2013. Today, the company has announced that Damian will be assuming the position of principal photographer and educator at Olympus UK. New Artists are bringing the work of photographer Sean Smith to the eerie setting of a crypt in Kensal Green Cemetery for an exhibition entitled "Sean Smith: On the margins." The exhibit focuses on images of marginalised people such as junkies, prostitutes and children caught up in war zones. “I’m interested in people on the edge of society”, says Smith. "They are usually either unrepresented or misrepresented.” The exhibition opens on 24th May and runs until 26th June.

The Annenberg Space for Photography hasannounced its next installation, Helmut Newton, featuring the work of the revolutionary fashion photographer. Opening on 29th June, this is the first exhibition of Helmut Newton’s work outside of gallery shows in Los Angeles, his long-time winter residence, the organisers say. Eggleston will receive the award on Thursday 25th April at the 2013 Sony World Photography Awards Gala Ceremony.
