Epson F-3200 Film ScannerPhoto-i have now completed their interactive review of the Epson F-3200 Film Scanner.

“This scanner is beautifully made with lots of attention to detail, but then so is the Millennium Dome. This scanner is rich in functionality, too bad the functions are not that useful. The fact that most of the extra features depend on having either the Epson R800, or SP 2100 printers, will put many buyers off. If you are going to include features like this then at least make sure that every user can access them, even if they have got a Canon or HP printer. Most of the photographers I know want to do something to their pictures, even if it is simple dust removal or colour correction. Scanning directly to a printer won’t give you that option. “

Epson F-3200 Film ScannerPhoto-i have started an interactive review of the Epson F-3200 Film Scanner.

“Finding the right scanner, that faithfully captures all the detail in a photograph is like looking for the Holy Grail, we are all looking to find the right scanner, that will deliver quality at a reasonable price. Epson have a good history in flatbed scanners. The Perfection 3200 and 4870 PHOTO, came very near in our quest, medium and large format film scans are excellent, but for 35mm film they still fall short. In January we will see a new model the Perfection 4990, I hope this one will take us a step nearer the ultimate goal. Then there is the new dedicated film scanner, the F-3200. I am not quite sure what to make of this one yet. Let me take you on a Step by Step review of this scanner and see whether £500 is going to be a wise investment.”

Canon CanoScan 9950FPhoto-i have solved their recent problems and completed their interactive, diary-like review of the new high-end Canon CanoScan 9950F flatbed scanner.

“For 35mm film scanning the 9950F is a pace nearer, but still not there. The scans were far too soft. However, with careful use of Unsharp Masking in Photoshop (or Elements) good quality scans can be achieved. If you only intend printing 6x4, A4 or A3 prints, then the quality will be more than sufficient. For high quality magazine standard scanning you are still going to have to look elsewhere. With medium and large format film, this scanner produced outstanding quality, I would not have any second thoughts about using this scanner for my professional work flow (I stopped using film four years ago).”

Canon CanoScan 8400FPCMagazine have reviewed the Canon CanoScan 8400F, a premium film and document scanner featuring a 3200 x 6400 dpi CCD sensor, a 12-frame FAU (Film Adaptor Unit) and advanced FARE Level 3 technology.

“Lots of scanners claim 48-bit color depth, but the 8400F delivers, with an ability to see detail from white to black that’s much greater than with most scanners. The difference is most apparent in slides. For example, in one slide we use with a dark tree line against a bright sky with clouds, the 8400F shows more detail in both the trees and clouds than the Microtek 6100 Pro - even though the 6100 Pro’s scans offer better quality than most flatbed scanners. We also saw slightly more detail in scans of some photos with the Canon unit.”

HP Scanjet 4070 PhotosmartBytesector have published a review of the new HP Scanjet 4070 Photosmart digital flatbed scanner, a stylish device with a unique photo door to hold photos in place and make scanning simple.

“Scanning negatives is very simple as it basically involves just inserting your negatives into a special holder on the lid of the scanner and then hitting the scan negatives button. Again, the scanner is very particular about any type of damage to the negatives. Even the smallest of scratches will be picked up and become a part of the digital image. This isn?t the scanner?s fault, if anything, it proves the scanner is doing a good job, but it is something you need to be aware of. The scanning of negatives can be completed very quickly, and the Scanjet 4070 does a very good job in that short amount of time.”
