Wex Photo Video announces biggest WexShorts filmmaking competition yet

Contest supported by Panasonic Lumix now includes Short Film and Documentary categories with £1,000 first prize

12 September 2018: Wex Photo Video, in association with Panasonic Lumix, has announced the 2018 WexShorts competition – its biggest filmmaking contest yet.

This year, WexShorts will feature two separate categories: Short Film and Short Documentary, with a prize of £1,000 of Wex vouchers up for grabs for the winner of each genre, and £200 of vouchers for each runner-up.

Short Film category

Those with a talent for narrative and a creative flare are encouraged to enter the Short Film category. The judges will be looking for originality, high quality cinematography, outstanding editing skills and solid sound design, while paying attention to visual creativity and storytelling ability.

Short Documentary category

This category has been designed for cinematographers specialising in documentary filmmaking. In addition to powerful storytelling skills, the judging panel will be seeking informative content packaged and delivered in a well-edited format, with a cleverly-constructed narrative that is meaningful, easy to understand and entertaining to watch.

UK filmmakers should submit their entries by midnight on 30 November 2018 via the Wex Photo Web site. Full details can be found at https://www.wexphotovideo.com/blog/competitions/wex-shorts--film-competition/. There is no limit to the number of entries per person, and entrants can participate in both categories. Each film must have been shot and edited in 2018, with a running time of four minutes or fewer to be eligible. All entries are subject to terms and conditions here.

Videographers of all levels of experience are welcome to enter, and the hardware used to capture the footage will not be part of the judging process. Entries shot on all equipment from entry-level DSLR to high-end cinema cameras will be accepted.

Kristian Hampton, technical editor – pro video at Wex Photo Video, said, “After the huge success of our previous WexShorts competitions, and following feedback from entrants, we are pleased to expand the scope of the contest to two individual categories. In this ever-growing industry, it is important to support up-and-coming talent, and our goal with WexShorts is to provide a platform to give budding filmmakers and experienced cinematographers alike the opportunity to showcase their work to audiences around the UK, and the chance to win a coveted award at the same time.”

Barnaby Sykes, category manager for imaging at Panasonic UK, commented, “As part of Panasonic Lumix’ ambition to support photographers and videographers of all levels, we are proud to be partnering with Wex Photo Video on their WexShorts competition. Through this collaboration, we’re strengthening our commitment to filmmakers and aim to demonstrate that Lumix is the most credible equipment choice for pro documentary and film production.”

Entries close at 23.59 on 30 November 2018, and a shortlist of five films from each category will be selected and published on the Wex Blog and social media channels. Winners will be announced shortly after this.
