According to new research by Nero, the creator of BackItUp, 44% of 'smartphone mums' admit that they would lose all of their photos if their phone was lost or broken. The study has revealed that 92% of UK mums are using smartphones to photograph their children, and 49% believe social media pages are the safest place to store photos. “We would urge parents not to play roulette with precious memories when backing up securely is such an easy and simple thing to do,” comments Charly Lippoth, Vice President Business Development at Nero. “Children grow up so fast that losing even a small amount of images can cut out a large chunk of a child’s life. Backing up is simple and easy, so there really is no excuse to forget.”

Snap-happy ‘smartphone mums’ risk losing memories of their kids' childhoods by failing to back up precious photos

  • 44% of UK mums have lost digital photos
  • Nearly half of mums think social media is a viable form of backup

London, UK, 11th November 2014 – 92% of UK mums are using smartphones to capture magical moments of their children, but many are not considering the pitfalls of storing memories on a single device. According to new research by Nero, the creator of BackItUp, 44% admit that they would lose everything if their phone was lost or broken.

This first generation of ‘smartphone mums’ still have a way to go until they become ‘tech savvy’, with a fifth complaining they have lost a treasured digital photo. Of the 67% of mums who do back up their content, 76% choose their PC/Mac, but despite some sites ‘owning your images’ 49% believe social media pages are the safest place to store photos.

On average each mum captures 1.1 photos a day but 7% will snap over 100 images a month. Notably, a quarter of those surveyed currently have over 200 images saved on their smartphone with one snap-happy mum admitting to being one dropped phone away from losing 12,000 photos saved on her phone!
