Britain's Best Amateur Photographer Revealed

London based photographer Sean Batten has been announced as the winner of the UK National Award, part of the 2014 Sony World Photography Awards. Batten, a software developer and keen amateur photographer, was chosen as the winner for a stunning architectural shot of one of the hallways at Canary Wharf tube station. As the UK National Award winner, Batten receives the latest Sony digital camera equipment and will attend the 2014 Sony World Photography Awards gala ceremony in London on 30th April.

18 March: London based photographer Sean Batten is today announced as the winner of the UK National Award, part of the 2014 Sony World Photography Awards, one of the world’s leading photography competitions.

Open to photographers of all abilities, the National Award seeks to uncover and honour the single best image taken by a British photographer entered into any of the ten Open categories of the 2014 Sony World Photography Awards.

Sean Batten, a software developer and keen amateur photographer, was chosen as the winner for a stunning architectural shot of one of the hallways at Canary Wharf tube station called “The Calm Before the Storm”.

The winning image was selected from over 5,800 entries by a local panel of judges including Nigel Atherton, Group Editor, IPC Photo. The jury also selected in runner-up positions:

I'm a software developer by day, and in my spare time a keen amateur photographer. I've been into photography for about 4 years now.

Sean Batten has been an amateur photographer for four years. He says: “I like to try most genres but always seem to come back to architectural photography. Luckily living in London gives me plenty of scope to practice this.”

As the UK National Award winner, Batten receives the latest Sony digital camera equipment and will attend the 2014 Sony World Photography Awards gala ceremony in London on 30 April. The winning photograph will also be exhibited at Somerset House, London from 1-18 May as part of the Sony World Photography Awards Exhibition and published on www.worldphoto.org
