Competition officially launched to celebrate World Photo Day

The hunt is on to find the student photographer of the year as part of a drive to encourage artistic photography and celebrate a “passion for pictures”.

Students are being invited to get behind the lens in a bid to win a package of prizes worth £11,000 in a competition being officially launched to mark World Photo Day, which takes place on August 19.

The national search for the UK’s number one student photographer has been launched by retailer Calumet Photographic in partnership with major brands, including Canon, Fujifilm and Epson, and leading industry magazine Professional Photography.

Jon Warner, Managing Director of Calumet Photographic, which has an online shop and eight stores across the country, said: “The Student Photographer of the Year Competition 2016 is an opportunity for students to showcase their talents to a national audience as well as winning an impressive bundle of prizes, including £4,250 worth of Canon vouchers.

“At Calumet we’re passionate about photography and we’re passionate about supporting people looking to further their photographic abilities. That’s why we run this annual competition which both celebrates young people’s passion for pictures and encourages artistic photography. Once again we expect the standards to be high.”

All UK students are invited to upload one photograph. People who join Calumet’s Student Membership can submit an additional two images to the competition, with the scheme costing £25 and members receive free gifts worth over £150.

Shortlisted entries will be reviewed by a panel of judges from the photography world, including Mr Warner, Simeon Quarrie, a Canon Ambassador, last year’s winner Oliver Henderson and Emma-Lily Pendleton, Editor of Professional Photography magazine.

The overall winner will be presented with their award at Calumet’s ‘Encounter More Open Days’ taking place in October and November across the company’s eight stores.

There will be prizes for the 10 runners-up who will each receive a £20 Calumet Gift Card and a one-year subscription to Professional Photography magazine.

World Photo Day is an international photography event taking place on August 19.

The date behind the campaign originates from the invention of the Daguerreotype, a photographic process developed by Joseph Nicèphore Nièpce and Louis Daguerre in 1837.

To enter, students should submit their best work along with up to 20 words explaining each image at www.calphoto.co.uk/student-awards. Calumet student members can enter their addition two images by emailing [email protected] including their membership number.

The images should preferably be in .jpg format but .tiff, .bmp and .png will also be accepted. Images need to be no larger than 2MB. Entries close on Friday, October 14 to give freshers a chance to take part.
