Edinburgh College student Oliver Henderson’s winning photo will take pride of place in the exhibition. His image of a woman in a red dress under a spotlight on a rooftop, set against an industrial background, scooped the title and the £11,000 prize bundle of photographic equipment with everything he needs to kick start a promising career in the industry.

His photo will be accompanied by the nine finalist entries from; Maria Karpova, University of the Arts London; Sioned Evans, University of Wales, Trinity Saint David; Joe Till, Walsall College; Monty Cholmeley, Oundle School; Katarzyna Janicka-Wojtowicz, City of Glasgow College; Ieva Vaitkuviene, London College of Contemporary Arts; Jolanta Ziarnik, West College Scotland; Thomas Craner-Buckley, University of the West of England and Jack Visser, West Lothian College.

Students were given free choice of topic and style, so the competition was open to landscape, portrait, lifestyle and abstract photographers. The shortlisted images include a sweeping mountain landscape, a high fashion black and white portrait, a dreamlike shot of a child running through a cornfield, a Turner-esque photograph of industrial chimney smoke in a stormy sky, a portrait of a beautiful woman surrounded by electric blue butterflies, a close up of a rabbit in rain-soaked grass and two timeless black and white portraits filled with life and character.

Judge and Managing Director of Calumet Photographic UK, Jon Warner, said:  “It was extremely difficult to pick a winner as the quality of entries was excellent. The exhibition looks fantastic and really shows off the pedigree of young photographers in the UK – the quality of the images coupled with the range of imaginative ideas makes me so excited about the future of British photography. I am sure all our finalists will go on to have fantastic careers in the industry!”

Jon presented Oliver with his award on Tuesday 24 March at the Canon Student Conference at The Photography Show, Birmingham NEC.  Canon’s Product Intelligence Professional, David Parry, also judged the competition, alongside professional photographers Rory Lewis and Tom Barnes.
