Canon Announces CanoScan 5200F Scanner
Canon Press Release 05/05/04
Canon delivers new levels of scanning performance for photo-enthusiasts
Canon, leader in photographic and imaging technology,is pleased to announce the 2400x4800 dpi, 48-bit colour depth CanoScan 5200F film and document scanner. A 6-frame Film Adapter Unit (FAU) allows high volume film scanning. Dust and scratches on spoiled film are automatically detected and removed with Canon’s highly accurate infra-red FARE Level 2 technology. A striking, sleek new design matches the scanner’s strong technical specifications.
Many of the CanoScan 5200F’s features are designed to save time. An enlarged FAU allows up to six 35mm unmounted negatives or four 35mm mounted slides to be scanned in a single operation. A USB 2.0 Hi-Speed connection works together with a new, faster scanning engine to deliver excellent scan speeds on both Windows and Mac operating systems. Fast Multi-Photo mode creates separate de-skewed files from a single pass scan of multiple photographs. ‘EZ’ buttons provide single step functionality for common operations, such as scanning to PDF file or email.
Brilliant quality
The scanner’s super fine 2400x4800 dpi resolution delivers superb, crisp images, while 48-bit colour depth ensures exceptionally accurate colour reproduction. The CanoScan 5200F features Canon’s diamond-pixel CCD sensor, giving the scanner greater resolving power than conventional rectangular-pixel sensors, resulting in sharper, higher quality scans. New dual reflectors increase light available to the sensor for improved speed and quality. With a Dmax value of 3.3, the CanoScan 5200F has the capacity to capture an extremely wide range of tonal information from film, vital for the demanding photo enthusiast. A new ‘Easy Colour Matching’ feature delivers vibrant, accurate colour output on compatible* Canon Bubble Jet printers by providing a wider range of colour information (Windows only).
Automatic film restoration
The inclusion of FARE Level 2 technology restores photographs to their original condition, automatically removing dust and scratches to save hours of laborious and intensive manual retouching. During the normal scanning process, a second infra-red scan detects and pinpoints imperfections in and on the film surface. These are then automatically repaired with remarkable results. Reconstruction of colour corrects the effects that aging can have on photographs by intelligently resaturating faded colours. A grain correction function reduces grain effect resulting from the use of fast (high ASA) film. Precise detection of the film frame ensures that automatic trimming captures the entire film image, avoiding excessive trimming.
Making things easy
Four ?EZ? buttons can be individually configured to perform commonly used functions. As well as scanning straight to PDF, these can include functions such as scanning direct to a printer (providing a good alternative to a dedicated photocopier) and scanning automatically to a ready-to-go email attachment. ?EZ? button functions are customised with the CanoScan toolbox utility. Text can be embedded into PDF files at time of scanning, making it possible to perform key word and phrase searching on stored files ? ideal for archiving documents.
New design features added with the user in mind:
- improved, easier to use film guides help prevent film scratching and speed up film changes
- quiet mode reduces acoustic noise levels from 53 dB to 47 dB
- an improvement to the lamp optical path reduces warm up process by up to three times ? allowing users to start scanning more quickly
Powerful software
Included with the scanners are a host of powerful applications including:
ArcSoft PhotoStudio 5.5 ? image-editing program allowing tasks such as colour adjustment, labelling, and album storage/retrieval functions
OmniPage SE OCR 2.0 ? powerful Optical Character Recognition application allows scanned text to be converted into recognisable text characters/data
