Canon’s New Multifunction Printer Delivers End-To-End Solution For SOHO Markets; Canon MultiPASS MP390 Model Adds Fax Capabilities Creating a Full-Function Entry-Level MFP

LAS VEGAS—(BUSINESS WIRE)—Jan. 7, 2004—Canon’s new MultiPASS(TM) MP390 Multifunction desktop photo printer delivers an end-to-end business solution for the home, small-office and home office users with high-quality photo printing, copying, scanning and newly added fax capabilities.

Built into a stylish and compact design, the MultiPASS MP390 multifunction printer allows users to manage their desktop space by combining many office functions into a single device. From printing photos, text and web pages to scanning images for homework projects, to copying receipts for household use, to sending or receiving black and white or color faxes, the new MultiPASS multifunction unit provides the versatility, convenience and quality needed by today’s consumers.

“We see strong growth in the multifunction printing market as consumers are asking for a single desktop solution that allows them to print, scan, fax and make photos at a cost-effective price point,” said Yukiaki Hashimoto, senior vice president and general manager of the consumer imaging group at Canon U.S.A., Inc., a subsidiary of Canon Inc. (NYSE:CAJ). “Our new MultiPASS MP390 Multifunction Desktop Photo Printer combines high-quality with the convenience and simplicity of having printing, copying, scanning and picture-making in one product at an affordable price.”

Whether it’s reports, letters, homework assignments or web pages, this new unit can handle the everyday printing tasks of the home and business. The MultiPASS MP390 printer has very fast printing speeds with up to 18 pages per minute (ppm) in black and up to 12 ppm in color*.

With the fast adoption of digital photography, people are looking for beautiful, rich photographs from the same machine they print fast, clear text. The MultiPASS MP390 printer delivers high-quality photos by using a print head that incorporates both 5 picoliter nozzles for fast printing speeds and microscopic 2 picoliter nozzles that significantly reduce the size of the dots on the page. Combining the small droplet size and printing at a maximum resolution of up to 4800x1200 color dpi** allows users to create photo prints that rival standard minilab prints.

To achieve the fast printing speeds of photos and documents, the MultiPASS MP390 printer incorporates 1,088 total nozzles into its print head and benefits from Canon’s advanced MicroFine Droplet Technology(TM), which ejects consistent prescribed-volume ink droplets for smooth gradations, accurate skin tones and rich, vibrant colors. To match the look of minilab prints, the MultiPASS MP390 printer supports edge-to-edge borderless printing in 4x6, 5x7 and 8.5x11 inch sizes.

Photo printing is a snap for the whole family with or without using the computer thanks to the new PictBridge technology featured on the new MultiPASS MP390 printer as well as onboard media card slots. PictBridge technology is a new industry standard for digital printers, digital cameras and digital camcorders that allows the direct printing of images from PictBridge compatible digital cameras and camcorders to a PictBridge compatible printer, regardless of brand or manufacturer, without the use of a computer ***.

Onboard media slots permit direct printing from a wide variety of digital camera memory cards including CompactFlash(TM), MicroDrive(TM), SmartMedia(TM), Memory Stick(TM) (excluding PRO(TM)) SD Card(TM) and Multimedia Card (TM). Memory Stick Duo(TM), xD PictureCard(TM) and mini SD Card(TM) can be used with the addition of a special adaptor sold separately. The onboard media slots are enclosed behind a smoke-gray dust cover.

Sending and receiving faxes on the MultiPASS MP390 fax is fast and efficient thanks to a Super G3 fax modem**** that is capable of sending a black and white fax in as little as three seconds a page or a color fax in approximately one minute per page*****. For the serious businessperson, the MultiPASS MP390 fax can receive up to approximately 200 pages in memory to help make sure crucial faxes make it to you even if the 100-page automatic document feeder is out of paper. Aiding home users without a dedicated fax line, the MultiPASS MP390 fax allows users to switch from a fax only receive mode to automatically detect if the incoming call is a fax transmission or a telephone call.

The MultiPASS MP390 fax can store up 40 speed dials as a directory dial by using the Fax/Tel receive mode. Multi-page fax sending is made possible using the scanning platen. Users are prompted by the MP390 fax to scan each page that they wish to send and when all the pages have been scanned, the MultiPASS MP390 machine will send the entire fax at once. For increased productivity, the MultiPASS MP390 fax also supports a Dual Access function that allows users to prepare one fax for sending while the machine is busy receiving or sending a separate fax.

Scanning on the MultiPASS MP390 flatbed scanner is accomplished using a high-resolution 1200 dots-per-inch (dpi) optical sensor for a hardware resolution of up to 1200 x 2400 dpi allowing for high-definition scans from documents, photographs, receipts or virtually anything that fits on the platen. Combining the high-resolution with a 48-bit processor that is capable of recognizing more than 281-trillion possible colors consumers can complete a variety of scanning tasks easily and with high-quality results. Additional advantages include the USB 2.0 Hi-Speed+ connection and the Z-Lid(TM) expansion top. USB 2.0 Hi-Speed can deliver preview scans in less than 10 seconds by using fast transfer rates of up to 480 Mbps. Canon’s exclusive Z-Lid expansion top lifts approximately one inch and stays flat for scanning thick books and magazines.

The MultiPASS MP390 copier can perform stand-alone copying of black and white or color documents at speeds up to 18 copies per minutes (cpm) in black and white or 12 cpm in color++. The reduction and enlargement feature allows for copying documents at any magnification from 25% to 400% in 1% increments. Additionally, since borderless printing is supported, the MP390 copier can also perform borderless copies in 4x6 inch, 5x7 inch, and letter sizes.

The sleek design of the MP390 multifunction printer allows the paper output tray to remain closed when not in use to keep dust at bay. When printing, the finely balanced paper output tray automatically opens as the paper hits it. For before or after hour printing needs, the driver can be set to silent mode reducing the decibel level during printing.

In addition to PictBridge and memory card direct printing capabilities the MultiPASS MP390 multifunction printer includes Easy-PhotoPrint (an ExifPrint compatible application) and Easy-WebPrint +++software. The Easy-PhotoPrint software allows users to print high quality digital photographs quickly and easily by automatically sizing digital images to print borderlessly on 4x6, 5x7 and 8.5x11 inch paper solving the aspect ratio dilemma. Easy-PhotoPrint also improves digital image quality by helping to eliminate “photo noise” and enhance color saturation with the “Vivid Photo” driver enhancements. The included Easy-WebPrint software facilitates printing from the Internet by automatically formatting and scaling the output so that the entire page is printed even when it extends over multiple screens. This time-saving and cost-saving feature reduces waste and ensures that the selected pages are formatted to print properly without trimming the right-hand margin.

Compatible with Windows(R) operating systems (Windows XP, Windows2000/ME-Millennium Edition/98), the MP390 multifunction printer also includes ScanSoft(R) OmniPage(R) SE OCR software(a). The Canon MultiPASS MP390 multifunction printer carries an estimated street price of $199.99.
