Canon Digital IXUS 800 IS Review at Digit.no
DIWA member and Norwegian website Digit.no have reviewed the Canon Digital IXUS 800 IS digital camera, which offers 6 megapixels, image stabilized 4x zoom lens (first time on an IXUS) and ISO 800.
“The name Canon IXUS has an amazing reputation for high quality and excellent design. The Digital IXUS 800 IS adds 4x zoom lens with optical image stabiliser, optical viewfinder and a 2.5” LCD screen to the long list of typical IXUS features. Its beautifully shaped metal body with its delicate silky finish gives the camera an attractive appearance. But be aware; it is also very sensitive to scratches and will soon look worn and old. The smooth surface also gives a slippery grip feeling and the camera is not shock resistant. The camera delivers 6 MP resolution “only”, yet this is more than sufficient for any casual photographer, contradicting the common misunderstanding of image quality being synonymous with number of megapixels. On the test bench, the IXUS 800 IS performed well, with good image quality, though not without flaws. The compact lens has numerous optical imperfections from design compromises, resulting in mediocre sharpness and excessive colour fringing, especially at telephoto. On the other hand, the camera delivers excellent exposure, almost perfect colour rendition, neutral white balance and excellent, fast and reliable image processing. Image noise is well suppressed, with fine detail definition in high quality A4 format prints with all sensitivities lower than ISO 800. In practical use, the IXUS 800 IS delivers images that most amateurs will rank as outstanding. Recent price drop has improved the camera’s value for money rating, but it is still a bit more expensive than many competitors.”
