Canon to Build New Factory in Japan

Canon has revived its plan to build a new camera factory in Nagasaki, with construction starting in July, according to Reuters. The plan was shelved a few months ago due to the crisis of the world economy. Canon now says that strong demand for its DSLRs makes the investment economically viable, although the construction of one of the originally planned three facilities might still be delayed. Reuters quotes a spokesperson as saying that the Nagasaki plant, which is to have an annual capacity of 4 million cameras inlcluding both SLRs and compacts, would start production in March/April 2010.

Notice regarding start of construction of Nagasaki Canon
TOKYO, June 5, 2009—Canon Inc. announced today that it would begin construction of Nagasaki Canon Inc. (President: Hiroyuki Wakasa; Location: Higashi Sonogi-gun, Nagasaki Prefecture) in July this year with the aim of starting operation in April of next year.
Original plans for Nagasaki Canon, which will produce digital single-lens reflex (SLR) cameras and compact digital cameras, had called for starting construction in January 2009 and commencing operation in December 2009. The company, however, decided to delay these plans in response to the rapid decline in demand for digital cameras due to the global economic downturn that began last fall.
A careful review of recent market and economic conditions by the company indicates that the digital SLR camera market is recovering steadily and is expected to continue realizing steady growth. The company decided to begin the construction of Nagasaki Canon upon assessing its production allocation for digital cameras from a mid- to long-term perspective.
As of next spring, Nagasaki Canon is scheduled to begin production operations for digital SLR cameras and compact digital cameras in collaboration with Oita Canon Inc., also located in Kyushu.
