Chicago Portraits

from the Chicago Tribune Staff
introduction by Michael Zajakowski
foreword by Rick Kogan

An exploration of both everyday and well-known Chicagoans through strikingly beautiful photographic portraits, as compiled from the Chicago Tribune’s vast historical archives.

Photography editors at the Chicago Tribune combed through the Tribune’s photo archives, curating a selection of photographs that reflects Chicago’s storied history, diverse population, and status as a hub attracting travelers who have been drawn to the city over the years. The result is Chicago Portraits, a beautiful coffee table volume that celebrates the Windy City and the individuals who people it.

The photos are a mix of black and white and full-color, drawn from the early 1900s to the present day. Some photos are undated, leaving us to guess at their provenance. Notable subjects include Jim Belushi, Oprah Winfrey, Studs Terkel, Rev. Jesse Jackson, John Malkovich, Harold Washington, Walter Payton, Billy Corgan, Vince Vaughn, Gillian Flynn, Tavi Gevinson, John C. Reilly, Tracy Letts, members of the Chicago Blackhawks, Barack and Michelle Obama, and many, many more. The Chicago Tribune, founded in 1847, is the flagship newspaper of the Tribune Company.
