DUBLIN, Calif., Sept. 29 /PRNewswire/—Electronics of all shapes and sizes are topping the list of “hot” holiday gifts this holiday season.  So what battery-powered goodies are tech-savvy “gifters” and “giftees” looking for this year?

Digital cameras top the list of “most wanted” electronic devices, according to two AvantGo(R) consumer electronics surveys with a total of 2,100 respondents.  DVD players, DVD recorders, global positioning (GPS) devices and high-definition televisions (HDTV) were also high on the wish lists of the tech-savvy, PDA and smartphone-carrying survey respondents.

With so many different “bells and whistles” to choose from, walking in to the electronics store or searching online for the perfect digital camera can be a daunting task.  Do you pick the camera with the higher megapixels, the better optical zoom or longer battery life?  And, with so many features to choose from, which ones are “must have” versus “nice to have”?

The AvantGo survey reveals respondents’ perceptions of the most sought after digital camera features.  Picture quality tops the list, indicating that no matter how much more technical cameras get, users really just want the ability to snap great pictures—with minimal effort.  But bells and whistles are what make picture taking fun and easy.  So, when making your selection, keep in mind the following features that respondents call “essential” or “extremely important”:

  1.  Quality of pictures
  2.  Picture resolution / megapixels
  3.  Quality of the lens
  4.  Fast auto-focus
  5.  Optical zoom
  6.  Fast “click to capture” button
  7.  Fast “power on” to take pictures
  8.  Battery life
  9.  Type of memory card
  10. Camera design

And this holiday season is the right time to surprise your “giftee” with a new digital camera!  More than 60 percent of respondents indicated plans to purchase a digital camera on their own within six months to a year.

If a digital camera isn’t the right gift for that special someone, a television might be.  While 63 percent of those surveyed already own three or more televisions, 38 percent are planning on purchasing a new television in the coming year, with one-quarter planning on buying an HDTV and 8 percent gearing up for a home theater system.
