January 21-25, 2010
Application Deadline: December 7th, 2009

Adventures in Photography
Crash-land on the Big Island this January for the first-ever staging of EXPOSURE. EXPOSURE aims to combine the ingredients of photography, place, and personalities to explore, share, and celebrate the potentials of image-making and life.

A Hawai’i Exploration
Over several intensive days, participants will embark upon, develop, and bring to completion a series of photographic assignments on the Big Island. Assigned to teams and armed with the basics: accommodation, transportation, food, general guidelines and loose expectations – as well as an initial briefing replete with potential locations and leads – each group’s sole purpose will be to collaboratively complete their assignment within the time and budget specified. The big question might be, who can pull it all off best?

Shared with the World
Along the inevitable twists and turns of the journey, EXPOSURE: Hawai’i will be filmed and aspects will be produced as shorts by Living Exposed. However, distinct from the approach most often employed by the entertainment industry, this production will be actively developed by all participants - as a byproduct of their photographic inquiries. EXPOSURE will not be artificially dramatized, but will seek to share a story of discovery. The goal of the final media (distributed primarily via online channels) will be to: 1) increase insight into the unfolding of photographic challenges; 2) encourage and share the beauty of artistic expression in “real time”; and 3) entertain through – and in doing so promote – the lived aspects of photography that celebrate an appreciation for the world we live in. This is going to be fun!

Give it a Shot – Apply Today
Everyone is a photographer, and EXPOSURE will aim to reflect that ethos. A broad range of participants are sought, from beginners looking to learn more about cameras and all their capabilities to professional photographers eager to apply their knowledge and expertise to something new. We believe that the real world and real people create the finest of classrooms, and that many of the best opportunities for education are found by simply getting out there.

Involvement in EXPOSURE: Hawai’i will be limited to a small number of participants (~10) selected from applications received by December 7th, 2009. Those notified of acceptance will be asked to confirm their participation by making a non-refundable USD $350.00 holding payment. A final registration fee of USD $950.00 will be due no later than two weeks prior to the commencement of the project. The payments will cover all major costs, including on-island transport, accommodation for the duration of the project, meals and snacks for the duration of the project days, as well a limited amount of EXPOSURE-related gear including field notebooks, supplemental materials, and an item of customized clothing.

Please note that EXPOSURE does not provide travel to or from Kona, Hawai’i, or cover personal incidentals (e.g. additional food or drink, memorabilia), nor offer any cameras, computers, or specialized photographic equipment to participants. All participants are expected to provide their own photographic gear (including computers and photographic accessories if available), but prospective applicants should also note that the possession of extensive (or expensive) photographic gear is not necessarily advantageous.

Win an EXPOSURE Scholarship
Two participants – based on the merits of their applications – will be awarded scholarships to attend EXPOSURE: Hawai’i. The scholarship packages will cover the EXPOSURE registration fee, and also include a stipend of USD $500.00 to help offset travel expenses to and from Kona, Hawai’i or incidentals. This initiative is based on the goal of making EXPOSURE accessible to and inclusive of deserving individuals independent of their present financial status. Scholarship value each = ~ $1,800.00 To apply for a scholarship, check the the appropriate box on your EXPOSURE application.

Staff
EXPOSURE will be directed by Jesse Ward Stephen, photographer and Ph.D. Candidate in Anthropology at the University of Hawai’i at Manoa. Jesse’s interests lie at the intersection of image-making and the human experience, reflected in his involvement in archaeological fieldwork as well as the practice and teaching of photography. He directed his first photography workshop in 2003, and to-date he has worked with secondary, high school, and college students (as well as professionals) internationally. His current archaeological research is based on the Big Island. Other staff to be announced.

EXPOSURE strives to uphold the highest levels of professionalism, ethics, and cultural sensitivity throughout all aspects of its organization and operation. Prospective applicants should be prepared to do so too.
