Roger Morgan Introduces the Language of Emotions in his Photography

This new picture book presents the human face as both an art form and a universal language of emotion that promotes a dialogue of fascination

VICTORIA, Australia – Roger Morgan explores exotic places of Nepal, China, Pakistan and India where he found wonders through the lens of his camera documenting the extraordinary beauty of the different cultures and people he encountered.

In this stunning picture book, Facing East - Photos from the Heart, Morgan presents a collection of photo portraits of the people who live in the shadow of the Himalayas and their extension ranges. He shows the old bear marks of troubled times, whilst noting the young are yet to be challenged. The portraits were shot in Sichuan, China during June 2009, in Sichuan and North West Yunnan during May/June 2011, in Ladakh, Northern India during September 2011, in Pakistan during May 2012 and Nepal during October/September of the same year. They are not posed. They are taken in the instant of discovery, in the ambient light of the street.

Morgan goes for the real thing, capturing the raw and honest images his subjects portray, getting under the skin, entering the personal, the space that divides and calls for reflex. The shutter snaps to snare that involuntary retort that mirrors what is truly there, the moment when all those facial muscles spring into play; so hard to replicate – that which cannot easily be copied has value. For the old, the lines and the wrinkles like growth rings in a tree. For the young their countenance fresh like tabula rasa, their story yet to be written.

The stunning photographs in Facing East - Photos from the Heart showcases Morgan’s passion to seek out captivating  images that show the different facades of the human face, giving the readers a glimpse into the lives led by these culturally distinct and diverse people.

About the Author

ROGER MORGAN has degrees in Engineering and the Arts. He started his career as an apprentice at the Royal Naval Dockyard, Portsmouth, England. He journeyed to Australian in 1967 and spent a year on Macquarie Island with an Australian Antarctic Research Expedition. Since then he has held positions in Research, Corporate Strategy and Operations with a National TELCO. His interest in photography grew out of a passion for pelagic birds and their habitat. But it’s the human face that intrigues him, in that expressions can be both generic and universal and thus culturally neutral. He attempts to show this in his images; to illustrate yet again how small the world is.
