FOTODC AND THE GOETHE INSTITUT PRESENT FotoWeekEDU WORKSHOPS AND PORTFOLIO REVIEWS DURING 2013 FESTIVAL

Leading names in photography share insights and expertise at FotoWeekEDU!

WASHINGTON, DC — FotoDC announces the 2013 FotoWeekEDU line-up, FotoWeekDC’s second year of educational programming at the Goethe Institut, featuring presentations by top professionals in the photography world.

From November 2 through 7, FotoWeekEDU will present eight half-day workshops that will range in areas of focus, from Industry Knowledge and Photojournalism to Fine Art and Marketing, as well as various other topics relevant to photographers today.

Additionally, FotoWeekEDU will offer a full day of Portfolio Reviews on Sunday, November 3 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Curators, photographers, photography dealers, photo editors and other experts from the fields of fine art, photojournalism and multimedia will offer participants appraisals, valuable business insights and advice. 2013 reviewers include: Iris Brosch, Fabian Goncalves, David Hicks, Kat Kiernan, Matthew Rakola, Carolyn Russo, Robert Schlotter, Paul Simkin and Frank Van Riper.

Photography & the Law : The Perfect Storm of Access, Copyright and Social Media Issues
Presenter: Mickey Osterreicher, General Counsel to the National Press Photographers Association (NPPA)
Saturday, November 2; 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Photographers are caught in the middle of a perfect storm of technology, terrorist fears and a World Wide Web mentality of entitlement to images. This issue has only been exacerbated by the widespread proliferation of cellphone cameras and the ability to post photos and recordings on the Internet. At the eye of the storm are copyright, fair use and orphan works issues as they relate to visual images and account for the misappropriation of tens of thousands of images by those users who either do not know or do not care about the intellectual property rights of the creators. Photo Editing A to Z
Presenter: Elizabeth Krist, Senior Photo Editor, National Geographic Magazine
Saturday, November 2; 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.
National Geographic Senior Photo Editor Elizabeth Krist will walk through the mechanics of taking a massive number of photographs and shaping a story for maximum effectiveness in different end uses, from digital and e-publishing to printed magazines and books.  Krist will outline the process of crafting a story for publication, starting with how ideas come in and photographers are hired, through to a final layout. More info.

Mobile Image Making: The Best Camera in the World is the One You ALWAYS Have with You
Presenter: Chris Alvanas, lightyearimaging.com
Sunday, November 3; 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Chris Alvanas from lightyearimaging.com, a recognized expert in digital photography, will guide workshop participants through the use of smartphones as a primary artistic tool and creation of gallery-worthy works. The workshop will cover use of iPhone, iPad, Android, etc. to capture dynamic images, panoramas and high-definition images. Alvanas will teach the use and selection of apps for enhancing, embellishing, sharing and archiving photos. More info.

Fearless Color: Essentials of Color Managed Digital Workflow
Presenter: Rob Van Petten

This workshop is designed to help participants build a confident and accurate color workflow for photographic projects. Patten will discuss and demonstrate the best tools and techniques for keeping colors true and honest to the reality of the original scene, as well as how to creatively exaggerate colors to bring a new reality to captured moment.  More info.

Advanced Retouching and Image Construction

Wednesday, November 6; 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
Robert Severi will present a “before” and “after” collection of his images, focusing on retouching and image construction. All his images go through the Photoshop process, some just for retouching and creative manipulation. Others are composites of, sometimes, dozens of separate photographs to create the final image. Severi will take participants step-by-step through the thought process, the shooting, as well as the post-production techniques he uses to achieve the desired affect. More info.

Professional Practice for Emerging Photographers
Presenter: E. Brady Robinson
Thursday, November 7; 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

This workshop will feature strategies for exhibiting work, locating alternative exhibition venues and self-publishing opportunities. Robinson will cover best practices for branding, marketing, and e-portfolios and site case-study examples of successful contemporary photographers working in the field today. The workshop will also include a hands-on component in which students will learn how to create and format an artist CV, edit/sequence work for call of entries and how to write an artist statement. Participants will walk away with an action plan and the tools/skills necessary to create exhibition opportunities, self-publish and reach new markets. More info.
