Fujifilm Professional has announced the winner of its 2011 Student Awards. The title of ‘Fujifilm Student Photographer of the Year 2011’ goes to Celia Maumene of Newcastle College, who has also won £200 worth of Fuji films, a trophy, plus a professional quality portfolio by Genesis Imaging, together with a 20"x16” Clamshell Portfolio box. The printing will be supervised by Genesis Imaging’s creative director, Mark Foxwell, who will mentor Celia for the next twelve months. Celia will also receive a PR package from the promoter of the Awards, WPS Media.

Fujifilm unveils Student Awards 2011 winner

Fujifilm Professional has announced the winner of its 2011 Student Awards. The winner is Celia Maumene of Newcastle College who wins the coveted title of ‘Fujifilm Student Photographer of the Year 2011’ plus a fantastic prize package courtesy of sponsors Genesis Imaging. 

Celia will be presented with £200 worth of Fujifilm films, a trophy, plus a professional quality portfolio by Genesis Imaging, together with a 20"x16” Clamshell Portfolio box. The printing will be supervised by Genesis Imaging’s creative director, Mark Foxwell, who will mentor Celia for the next twelve months. Celia will also receive a PR package from the promoter of the Awards, WPS Media.

All images were taken on Fujifilm Professional film and submitted via www.fujifilmstudentawards.co.uk and from these initial entries 19 Merit Winners were invited to submit a print for final judging. Each Merit Winner collects 10 rolls of Fujicolor Professional colour negative film.

This year, Norwich University College of the Arts was the source of the most entries in the Awards with 174 submissions. The University will be presented with a certificate and £200 worth of Fujifilm Professional film.

The judging panel was made up of Ken Sethi, Genesis production director, Steve Butler, print manager from Genesis, Pete Brandon, director of WPS Media and leading wildlife photographer Roger Hooper. Ken Sethi explained the choice of winner: “Celia’s image has the feel of an advertising shot and combines some ingenious elements. In reference to the brief ‘Senses’ the image cleverly links touch and sight whilst also referencing the impact of the loss of a sense, in this case blindness. The sheet of braille contains a line from The Sound of Silence by Simon and Garfunkel, ‘Hello darkness my old friend’ which shows a great attention to detail.”

Gabriel Da Costa from Fujifilm Professional commented on the Awards: “The theme for this year’s awards was Senses and the brief obviously appealed to students as we received some really imaginative, well executed images. It’s very encouraging see the next generation of professionals have such vision and skill.”

He continued: “As ever, the standard of entries was high and the judges had a difficult task in selecting the overall winner.  Celia is a worthy winner and I’m sure the help and guidance she will receive from Mark Foxwell from Genesis Imaging will help her further her career enormously.”
