May 16, 2011, Commack, NY — The Minnesota Landscape Arboretum presents “Full Exposure: Images to Change the Future,” a photography symposium featuring acclaimed photographers Daniel Beltrá and Molly Steinwald and sponsored by National Camera Exchange and Tamron USA. The lecture-style symposium will meet from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, June 11, in the Arboretum’s Oswald Visitor Center.
Planet Earth faces daunting challenges of overpopulation, overconsumption of resources and climate change - all contributing to the decline of plants and animals around the globe. Photographers Beltrá and Steinwald visually document these changes, each in their own way telling a story of environmental degradation - even as they convey a message of hope and restoration. In this event, Beltrá and Steinwald will discuss their philosophy and photo techniques while displaying samples of their award-winning work. Serving as moderator will be Jane Kirtley, University of Minnesota Silha Professor of Media Ethics and Law.
About the Photographers
Born in Spain and now based in Seattle, Beltrá has spent the last 20 years of his career bringing into sharp focus the story of our planet. He has documented several expeditions by Greenpeace to the Brazilian Amazon Rain Forest, the Arctic, the Southern Oceans and the Patagonian Ice Fields, among many others. Beltrá has received well-deserved attention. Among others, he has received awards from the World Press Photo (WPP) contest and China International Press Photo contest for his work on drought in the Amazon; the “Global Vision Award” (2008) from the Pictures of the Year International contest for work in the Ross Sea and Amazon; and The Prince’s Rainforest Project, given via the Sony World Photography Awards (April 2009). Granted by Prince Charles, this award sent Beltrá for three months to Congo, Amazon and Indonesian rainforests to create photos for a book, website and exhibition about the state of the world’s rainforests. Beltrá is a fellow of the International League of Conservation Photographers. In late 2009, he was profiled by ABC News as its “Person of the Week.”
Molly Steinwald is an acclaimed photographer and environmental educator. She is associate director of science education for Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens in Philadelphia, a PhD candidate in zoology (Miami University), a researcher and speaker. She is active in many national and global environmental and photography organizations.
