Getty Images Announces 2013 Grants for Editorial Photography

Getty Images today announced that applications for its 2013 Grants for Editorial Photography are now being accepted. Five photojournalists will be selected to receive grants of US$10,000, intended to provide the funding and freedom to pursue projects of personal and journalistic significance. The Grants for Editorial Photography were created in 2004 to provide emerging and established photographers with the means, creative freedom and collaborative editorial guidance to pursue projects of personal and journalistic significance. Previous grant recipients include Bharat Choudhary for “The Silence of ‘Others’,”  Paolo Marchetti for “FEVER – The Awakening of European Fascism,” Sebastian Liste for “The Brazilian Far West” and Kosuke Okahara for “Fragments/Fukushima.” Grants applications are open until 1 May, 2013 before midnight GMT. Winners will be announced in September 2013 at the Visa Pour l’Image photojournalism festival in Perpignan.

Getty Images Announces 2013 Grants for Editorial Photography

New York, NY – April 17, 2013 – Getty Images today announced that applications for its 2013 Grants for Editorial Photography are now being accepted. Five photojournalists will be selected to receive grants of US$10,000, intended to provide the funding and freedom to pursue projects of personal and journalistic significance.

“Photojournalism is a powerful force for telling compelling social, political and cultural stories,” said Jonathan Klein, Getty Images co-founder and Chief Executive Officer. “The Grants for Editorial Photography program is at the heart of Getty Images’ commitment to press freedom, excellence in photojournalism and our belief in the power of images to effect change.”

The Grants for Editorial Photography were created in 2004 to provide emerging and established photographers with the means, creative freedom and collaborative editorial guidance to pursue projects of personal and journalistic significance. Previous grant recipients include Bharat Choudhary for “The Silence of ‘Others’,”  Paolo Marchetti for “FEVER – The Awakening of European Fascism,” Sebastian Liste for “The Brazilian Far West” and Kosuke Okahara for “Fragments/Fukushima.”

Grants applications are open until May 1, 2013 before midnight GMT. The independent judging panel comprises representatives selected by Getty Images for his or her talent and industry experience. The judges will determine the winners based on applicants’ ability to execute their proposed project with compelling visual narrative in documentary feature format, taking into account the caliber of portfolio, project merit and professional ability. The 2013 Grants for Editorial Photography judging panel are:

Jon Jones, Director of Photography, The Sunday Times Magazine
Olivier Laurent, Acting Deputy Editor, British Journal of Photography
Tiziana Faraoni, Photo Editor,  l’Espresso

Winners will be announced in September 2013 at the Visa Pour l’Image photojournalism festival in Perpignan, France.

Getty Images’ Emerging Talent Award, is also accepting applications. The program provides outstanding photographers under the age of 30 and not associated with any agency with mentoring and the opportunity to have their work showcased on the Reportage by Getty Images website. The deadline is also May 1, 2013.
