GUARDIAN PHOTOGRAPHER TO EXHIBIT WORK IN AID OF HAITI
Guardian photographer and filmmaker David Levene will be exhibiting a selection of his Haiti earthquake photographs and films at the Old Truman Brewery from next week to raise funds for the Disasters Emergency Committee’s Haiti Earthquake Appeal.
The exhibition – ‘Haiti 12:01:10’ – will run from Tuesday 16 February until Sunday 21 February at the Old Truman Brewery’s Dray Walk Gallery in London E1.
David visited Haiti to cover the aftermath of the devastating earthquake that struck near Port-Au-Prince on 12 January 2010. Signed, limited edition prints of David’s photographs taken both this year and during an earlier Haiti assignment in 2008, will be available for sale at the exhibition, with all proceeds going to the DEC.
David Levene said: “The sense of hopelessness when I visited Haiti after the earthquake was overwhelming. The scale of the devastation is so vast, and the starkest thing I recall is looking up at the hillside urban settlements from the city, and realising just how difficult it would be to even access these dwellings on your own by foot, let alone rescue teams and their equipment.
“When I left Haiti I was trying to think about what I could do to raise as much awareness of the situation as possible, and it was then that I came up with the idea for the exhibition. I’ve had a great response, with many organisations pitching in to help. I’d like to thank the Old Truman Brewery who are kindly providing the Dray Walk Gallery space free of charge, and the Guardian, which is the official media partner for the exhibition.”
Tamsin O’Hanlon, Old Truman Brewery, said: “The Old Truman Brewery is proud to be sponsoring David’s photographic exhibition which aims to raise desperately needed funds for the people of Haiti.”
