HD DSLR Workshops Press Release
Internationally-acclaimed director of photography Gale Tattersall announces his new series of master class workshops on Canon HD DSLR Cameras. Emmy and ASC-nominated Gale Tattersall has photographed such varied work as The Commitments, Ghost Ship, Pushing Tin, Wild Orchid, Tank Girl, and The Addams Family. He is currently the director of photography for HOUSE, which airs Monday nights on FOX.
Recent breakthroughs in digital technology have allowed handheld digital SLR cameras (and in particular the Canon 5D Mark II, 7D, and 1D Mark IV) to shoot professional-quality high definition 1080p video. For the first time in history, an entire episode of network television was filmed with handheld digital SLR cameras. On May 17, 2010 the Season 6 finale of HOUSE aired to international critical praise, reaching 11 million Americans and 80 million people in 66 countries worldwide. Entertainment Weekly (EW) called the episode “ginormous in scope” and Screenrant.com ‘s review raved “a beautiful masterpiece.” A firm supporter of innovative technologies, director of photography Gale Tattersall used low-cost Canon 5D Mark II cameras to shoot the episode, and has continued to use the cameras frequently in Season 7.
Now, Tattersall has decided to share his knowledge and his techniques with filmmakers, students, and budding artists in a series of live workshops. HD DSLR Workshops with Gale Tattersall are live master classes taught by Gale Tattersall on Canon digital single-lens reflex (DSLR) cameras. The workshops will specifically focus on the high-definition (HD) video capabilities of the cameras, and their use for film production. Although centered around the Canon 5D Mark II (which Gale uses every day on HOUSE), the workshops will be of use to anyone with an interest in HD DSLR cameras and digital film production in general. They are suited to visually-oriented individuals taking the first step in HD digital production, as well as those re-inventing their career opportunities. Tattersall and his assistants will teach use of the cameras and accessories, lighting technique, and artistry. This is very much a hands-on journey that imparts skills from focused professionals who are re-inventing cinema, television, and visual media through cutting-edge technology.
Tattersall commented, “I can honestly say that the [Canon] 5D has revolutionized the business. You can now shoot a network tv show with a camera you can get at your local retail store for $2,500. It’s a tool that allows anybody to do almost anything that renowned filmmakers can accomplish, but at a fraction of the price.”
HD DSLR Workshop Level One - (November 6, 13, 20, 27 / 2010) Each of the four days will revolve around a different aspect of the cinematographic process, both the technical and creative sides of using these new digital tools. 5D Mark II cameras will be available for students to experience hands-on, as well as all the equipment and gear that Gale uses regularly on House. Students can expect to learn how to use the basic and advanced functions of the camera, lighting, shooting, and the filmmaking process from concept to creation. The final class will offer students the chance to take the concepts and skills they have learned over the month and create a collaborative short film.
Shooting the Documentary - (December 26, 27, 28, 29, 30 / 2010) “Shooting the Documentary” is the first in a series of “field trip” workshops taught by Gale Tattersall and his team. “Shooting the Documentary” is more than a master class: it is a fully immersive collaborative filmmaking experience, shooting “on location” in beautiful Ojai, California (80 miles north of Los Angeles). Students will conceive, produce, and together co-direct a short documentary film about an organic food market, learning valuable skills of film production with lightweight and portable Canon cameras. Gale will demonstrate, through documentary cinema, how capture the beauty and truth of real life. This workshop will offer students the chance to work directly with Gale and his team to create a real film from start to finish using Canon 5D cameras.
Each student of the workshop will have the opportunity to shoot part of the film him or herself, working closely with Gale, and gaining real-world knowledge of the camera and the filmmaking process. Over a five-day intensive workshop in late December, students will learn shooting and guerilla lighting, as well as location sound, and documentary directing techniques. The final day of the workshop students will practice basic editing, and together will begin to craft the first rough-cut of the complete documentary film. The finished version will be distributed online and students will receive billing in the credits.
