AN INSIGHT GUIDES PHOTOGRAPHIC COMMISSION WORTH £3,000 UP FOR GRABS

As millions of people prepare to ‘down tools’ for their annual summer holiday, Insight Guides, in association with The Independent on Sunday, invites adults with a love of travel photography to enter a competition in which the winner will receive a photographic commission worth £3,000. The commission from Insight Guides to photograph a travel destination for a future guide book could pave the way for a new and exciting career in travel photography. And, for the first time, the competition has been opened up to under-18s with the winner picking up a camera and being given the opportunity to spend a day with a professional photographer from the Independent on Sunday, providing valuable work experience.

Whether professional or amateur, any UK-based adult who thinks his or her photography is a cut above the average holiday album can enter by submitting three images that, having been taken since 1 January this year, capture the essence of a destination, using ‘earth’ as the theme.  Photographers have until Friday 10 September 2010 to submit their entries for judging by an expert panel made up of the picture editors of both the Independent on Sunday and Insight Guides, a former Trustee of the Royal Photographic Society, high profile photographer Kevin Cummins, and David Parry, head of Canon UK’s product intelligence. The winner will be announced in the travel pages of The Independent on Sunday shortly afterwards, along with the winning portfolio. The second prize is a Canon PowerShot SX210 IS worth £389 while the 3rd and Under 18s prizes are both a Canon PowerShot SX120 IS, each worth £209.  The prizes will be presented to the adult winners in London at Stanfords – the UK’s leading specialist retailer of maps, travel books and other travel accessories – on the evening of 26 October, and treated to a meal and a special night at Le Meridien Piccadilly, a beautiful hotel in the heart of London.  The winner of the under-18 category will be presented personally with the prize on a separate occasion.

It is simple to enter: just submit, in either digital format or print, three colour travel photographs that have been taken this year that capture the theme of earth. Digital entries, which must be high-resolution Jpegs sized to a minimum of 3MB at 300dpi and a maximum of 15 MB at 300dpi, should be emailed individually or as a group of three to [email protected] .  Alternatively prints, no bigger than 10 x 8 inches (25.4cm x 20.3cm), can be sent to Photography Prize, Insight Guides, APA Publications, 58 Borough High Street, London SE1 1XF.  Images, which should be clearly labelled with the contact details and age of the entrant, must not have previously been entered for any other photography competition. For further information, entrants should visit www.insightguides.com as terms and conditions apply.

The winner of last year’s competition was Micah Sarut who spent several months travelling in Australasia and Asia. His winning images were taken in India in three different locations. [One of his three winning images is pictured above.]
