THE NEW, JOYOUS COMPLEXITY OF OLD JERUSALEM REVEALED
—-Youth, Vitality, Art, Music and Peace Abound
Jerusalem is a mecca for Christians, Muslims, Jews and Armenians throughout the world. Literally a cornerstone for religion, the city was built with love, faith and hope. Every stone, niche and alleyway has a story to tell. The city’s history is also turbulent and rife with disputes, but today’s Jerusalem is modern, exciting, and vivid.
The new book, Jerusalem Always, by renown photographer Marcelo Bendahan, reveals Jerusalem in a new light. In a city full of history lies a vibrant culture shimmering with vitality. His photographs capture the unique light of Jerusalem and convey not only a city full of history but also one brimming with life.
“During the months I lived in Jerusalem,” says Bendahan, “I would awaken as the sun began to illuminate the city, and roam its streets and alleys, observing the colorful mosaic of inhabitants and pilgrims as they began a new day.” He continues, “I would join them for religious festivals and cultural events, a night on the town or a stroll in the park.”
Unique to today’s photography, Bendahan allows his pictures to tell their story without computer generated enhancements. Written in English and Spanish, he touches on all aspects of life in today’s Jerusalem including:
• Old City - a perfect venue for hide and seek
• Art Garden of Israel Museum - interprets Jerusalem as the ‘navel of the world’
• Western Wall - visitors tuck their deepest prayers and yearnings in cracks and crevices
• Festivals - parades abound from Purim to Independence Day
• Mount of Olives - home for churches, residences, a hotel and cemetery
• Diversity - including Ethiopians, Armenians, Jews, Christians, and Muslims living together peacefully
• Life - bustling with shopping, stores, fashion and education, Jerusalem is home for the young and old
“The city’s vitality and colorfulness constantly enchanted and amazed me,” adds Bendahan, “My hope is Jerusalem Always brings the awesome beauty of the city to life.”
