UNICEF Ambassador Sir Roger Moore joins KODAK to celebrate $1million dollars raised for children

Geneva, Monday 10 January 2005 – UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador Sir Roger Moore KBE, joined Chairman of Eastman Kodak SA Etienne Bourgeois in Geneva today to mark the $1 million milestone in the corporate partnership between Kodak and UNICEF, the United Nations Children’s Fund.  The impressive target was reached as Kodak’s 2004 ‘One Million Smiles’ appeal reached $150,000, largely due to the support of Kodak customers and employees, bringing the total donation to $1 million over four years.

Launched in September 2004 Kodak’s ‘One Million Smiles’ appeal asked customers to complete a prize draw entry form available in all Kodak Express stores and online. For every form received Kodak donated $1 to UNICEF.  Justine Hawkins from London was the UK winner of the Draw, travelling to Geneva to join the celebrations as part of her prize, which also included winning a top-of-the-range Kodak Digital Camera. Kodak Express retailer Guy Newton from Quick Pic in Exeter also joined Justine in Geneva for the celebrations as his store encouraged the most entries.

The funds raised through this appeal will support UNICEF’s current End Child Exploitation campaign which raises funds and campaigns to protect millions of children from the worst forms of exploitation – child labour, child trafficking and commercial sexual exploitation. UNICEF aims to restore the childhoods of these children, providing them with the protective environment they need through projects that prevent exploitation and rehabilitate victims.

Since the partnership began in 2000, Kodak and UNICEF have worked closely on creative fundraising initiatives to raise funds for UNICEF’s priority areas of work.  For the ‘Click for Life’ appeal, launched on World AIDS Day 2003, a tailored email was sent to Kodak staff and UNICEF supporters to raise awareness of UNICEF’s work with children affected by HIV/AIDS.  Kodak made a 1 Euro donation to this work in return for every email that was clicked on. 175,000 Euros were raised within seven days and the message reached 300,000 people across the globe within one month.  In 2002 Kodak also supported UNICEF’s Great Expectations campaign – donating $200,000 to support UNICEF’s work to eradicate tetanus and save mother and babies lives from this preventable disease.

Receiving the $1 million cheque from Etienne Bourgeois in Geneva today, Sir Roger Moore said “This is an impressive achievement by Kodak, your employees and your customers. Every penny you have raised is making a real difference to the lives of vulnerable children in the world. UNICEF is dedicated to addressing the underlying causes of critical problems and Kodak has played a role in helping UNICEF do this.  With your most recent One Million Smiles campaign you will make a difference to the lives of those 246 million children working in jobs that are dangerous to their health and development, the 1.2 million children trafficked into exploitation each year and the one million girls and boys who are abused through commercial sexual exploitation”

Etienne Bourgeois said ‘Eastman Kodak Company has an active community relations and contributions program to respond to community needs. We have worked with UNICEF for a number of years and are impressed by the dedication and endurance with which UNICEF work to make a difference to the lives of children all around the world. With the One Million Smiles campaign, we were pleased to have our customers and employees join the effort of raising $150,000.”
