The Leica Super-Elmar-S 24mm f/3.5 ASPH. is a new superwide (19mm equivalent) lens for the Leica S system. With an optical formula comprising 12 elements in 10 groups, the Leica Super-Elmar-S 24mm f/3.5 ASPH. exhibits an extraordinarily high degree of freedom from distortion for such a wide-angle lens. Five of the lens elements are manufactured from glass with anomalous partial dispersion to prevent negative effects such as chromatic aberration. Two aspherical elements located behind the iris and the aspherical surface of the front lens minimise monochromatic aberrations. Thanks to the unusual construction of its focusing system, the Leica Super-Elmar-S 24 mm f/3.5 ASPH. offers extremely high image performance from the point of closest focus to infinity, the company says. The Leica Super-Elmar-S 24mm f/3.5 ASPH. is scheduled to be available in the UK at a suggested retail price of £5,330 including VAT from November 2012.

LEICA SUPER-ELMAR-S 24 mm f/3.5 ASPH.

New super-wide lens with outstanding optical properties

Photokina, Cologne, 17 September 2012: Leica Camera AG has expanded the Leica S medium format system with the addition of a new lens: the Leica Super-Elmar-S 24 mm f/3.5 ASPH. In 35 mm equivalent format, this corresponds to a focal length of 19 mm. This super-wide-angle lens guarantees excellent image quality, and is not only ideal for landscape and architectural photography, but also for interior photography and many other situations. The lens shows very high contrast rendition and maximum resolution at maximum aperture.

Thanks to the unusual construction of its focusing system, the Leica Super-Elmar-S 24 mm f/3.5 ASPH. offers extremely high image performance from the point of closest focus to infinity. During focusing, only the middle group of three lenses is moved. At the same time, one of the lenses is moved independently as a floating element and guarantees optimum ray paths at every setting.

With an optical system comprising 12 lenses in ten groups, the Leica optical design engineers have achieved an extraordinarily high degree of freedom from distortion for such a wide-angle lens. Five of the lenses are manufactured from glass with anomalous partial dispersion to prevent negative effects, such as chromatic aberration. Two aspherical lenses located behind the iris and the aspherical surface of the front lens minimise monochromatic aberrations.

As with other Leica S-System products, the Leica Super-Elmar-S 24 mm f/3.5 ASPH. is distinguished by rugged and enduring design, and construction that guarantees years of dependability, even with frequent use. The lens features a robust bayonet mount and is fully sealed against dust and spray, ensuring absolute reliability under the harshest shooting conditions.

Alongside the new Super-Elmar-S 24 mm f/3.5 ASPH., the current S-System lens portfolio offers a total of eight lenses (five of which will also be available in CS versions with a central shutter), that guarantee uncompromising image quality for almost all areas of photography.

The Leica Super-Elmar S 24 mm f/3.5 ASPH. is supplied with a lens hood that has been specially optimised for the ray paths of light passing through the optical system.
