HOME is a major collaborative project between FUJIFILM Corporation and Magnum Photos. Each participating Magnum photographer was invited to explore the subject of HOME - a theme chosen for its global nature and the inherently human sentiment – in their own style and sensibility. The project will be showcased in exhibitions in New York (Milk Gallery, 2-14 March 2018), London (The Vinyl Factory, 18 – 27 May 2018), Paris (Gallery Joseph, 10-17 June 2018), Toyko (Daikanyama Hillside Forum, 21-30 July 2018) and Cologne (Koeln Messe, 26-19 September).

HOME (http://home-magnum.com/), is a major collaborative project between FUJIFILM Corporation and Magnum Photos, involving 16 photographers and culminating in a ten-city exhibition, photobook and series of events.

Each participating Magnum photographer was invited to explore the subject of HOME - a theme chosen for its global nature and the inherently human sentiment – in their own style and sensibility. Collectively, these sixteen visual short stories create a poetic and complex portrait of what “home” is, and of what it can be.

Exploring the notion of Home­ was a formidable challenge for some photographers, comfortable and experienced in documenting the lives of others – and seldom their own. To some, “home” was the place in which they lived; to others, it was a welcome and peaceful return to their childhood memories. Some chose a distanced visual approach: photographing the geographical space of their home from above or from afar. Others chose to focus on family, of past and future generations; babies being born, ageing parents and teenage children leaving the nest. This global project takes us to over ten countries, travelling through the suburbs of Minneapolis to student halls of London, a childhood home in Buenos Aires to the twilight hour in Adelaide, the landscape of Cape Cod and the streets of New York’s Chinatown.
 
The resulting work reflects a personal response to a familiar subject that we all record photographically. Reminiscent of the legendary MoMA exhibition “The Family of Man”, the photographs highlight how dramatically the world has evolved since 1955, and with it, the notions of family, home, motherhood and fatherhood.

The project will be showcased in exhibitions in New York (Milk Gallery, 2-14 March 2018), London (The Vinyl Factory, 18 – 27 May 2018), Paris (Gallery Joseph, 10-17 June 2018), Toyko (Daikanyama Hillside Forum, 21-30 July 2018) and Cologne (Koeln Messe, 26-19 September). Details of five further international exhibitions and a series of events will be announced in due course and a commemorative photobook, designed by Stuart Smith, will be published in March 2018. Each individual project is accompanied by a behind the scenes video, providing insight into the photographers’ motivation and ambitions for their work.

About the project: 

Olivia Arthur (UK) – Arthur’s series is a tender documentation of her life in London before and after the birth of her daughter.
 
Antoine d’Agata (France) – d’Agata returns to Marseilles, France to explore the area in which he grew up.
 
Jonas Bendiksen (Norway)  - Bendiksen documents fatherhood, before and after the arrival of his third child, in rural Norway.
 
Chien-Chi Chang (USA) – Chang photographs in New York’s bustling Chinatown, an area he has been photographing for the past 25 years and where he describes his subjects as family.
 
Thomas Dworzak (Georgia/Iran/Germany) - Dworzak grew up in the Bavarian town of Cham, but found new homes in Tbilisi and with his wife’s family in Tehran. His work documents his relationship, and connection with, all three of his ‘homes”.
 
Elliott Erwitt (USA) - Erwitt’s photographs were taken in his apartment and studio in New York City, and his house in East Hampton, showing both his bizarre memorabilia from past photo shoots, and his dog, Canelo.
 
David Alan Harvey (USA) – A resident of both South Carolina and New York City, Harvey chose to photograph the Outer Banks of North Carolina, where he spends time with his family. 
 
Hiroji Kubota (Japan) – Kubota views his homeland of Japan, a country of islands, as seen from above.
 
Alex Majoli (Italy) – Majoli photographs in Sicily, Italy, where after many years abroad he has chosen to settle with his family.
 
Trent Parke (Australia) – Parke has photographed the twilight hour in his native city of Adelaide, the stomping grounds of the great Australian painter, Jeffery Smart.
 
Gueorgui Pinkhassov (Russia) – Pinkhassov captures the Soviet past in the epoch apartment in Moscow where he spent his youth.
 
Mark Power (UK) - Power’s daughter recently left home for University in London and his photographs document this new chapter in his family’s life.
 
Moises Saman (Spain/Peru) – Saman revisits the strange yet familiar country of Peru, where he was born but left as a child to relocate to Barcelona.
 
Alessandra Sanguinetti (USA) - Sanguinetti has two homes, her childhood home in Buenos Aries and her current home in California. Her work documents the former as a goodbye, focusing on “the traces time etched on the skin and surfaces.”
 
Alec Soth (USA) – Soth’s photographs were made while walking from his home in Minneapolis to his studio in St. Paul in late summer, 2017
 
Alex Webb (USA) - Webb’s photographs were taken in the small town of Wellfleet, Cape Cod. A childhood holiday destination, this is now where Webb and his wife and creative partner, Rebecca Norris Webb, retreat from and reflect on their work.
