Magnum Professional Practice: London
10th – 11th September 2011
Magnum Photos and youth arts charity IdeasTap are delighted to announce the second of five UK events which will provide photographers with practical industry information and access to key professionals.
Originated as a response to the changing nature of the photography market, Magnum’s Professional Practice events deliver impartial guidance from a wide range of visual imaging industries. With access to key individuals working in editorial, commercial, cultural and publishing industries, Magnum is well placed to advise the next generation of photographers.
In a series of weekend lectures, leading figures of the photographic industry will deliver presentations and advice on the best means in engaging with and working in these sectors. Eight speakers from a variety of industries, including the advertising & corporate, editorial, gallery, NGO, museum, publishing and rights managed sectors will each give presentations on their subject of expertise, with plenty of time for questions and networking opportunities.
This event is aimed a wide range of photographers at different stages of their career: professional photographers working in a particular discourse but wanting to explore other avenues; emerging photographers who require practical, vocational training; or semi-professional photographers wishing to make the commitment to full time practice. Each of Magnum’s Professional Practice lectures is tailored to deliver the best impartial advice and provide the opportunity to meet with key industry specialists. Places on Magnum’s Professional Practice course are limited and successful candidates will be chosen on the perceived benefit to the applicant’s career.
Through the generous support of IdeasTap, we are offering 10 bursary placements to photographers under the age of 25. Bursaries are ideally suited to student, graduate or emerging photographers and each awarded place will pay a subsidized rate of just £50 (+vat).
This weekend event will be held at IdeasTap Head Office in Bermondsey, London on Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th September 2011.
General places cost: £250 plus VAT (includes lunch and refreshments)

Peter Marlow – Magnum Photographer
Although gifted in the language of photojournalism, Peter Marlow is not a photojournalist. He was initially, however, one of the most enterprising and successful young British news photographers, and in 1976 joined the Sygma agency in Paris. He soon found that he lacked the necessary appetite for the job while on assignment in Lebanon and Northern Ireland during the late 1970s; he discovered that the stereotype of the concerned photojournalist disguised the disheartening reality of dog-eat-dog competition between photographers hunting fame at all costs. Since those days, Marlow’s aesthetic has shifted - in that he makes mainly color photographs - but his approach is unchanged. The color of incidental things became central to his pictures in the same way that the shape and mark of things had been central to his black-and-white work. Marlow has come full circle. He started his career as an international photojournalist, returned to Britain to examine his own experience, and discovered a new visual poetry that enabled him to understand his homeland. Having found this poetry, he has taken it back on the road: he now photographs as much in Japan, the USA and elsewhere in Europe as he does in the UK. Peter Marlow will deliver an inspirational career overview presentation.

John Wyatt-Clarke – Photography Agent – Wyatt Clarke Jones
John Wyatt-Clarke is one of the UK’s leading commercial photographic agents. His background in academic History of Art, publishing and at Magnum Photos led him to set up a niche agency that would introduce the work of non-advertising photographers (particularly documentary and fine-art photographers) to advertising clients. The strategy has put Wyatt-Clarke & Jones at the heart of the mainstream advertising establishment. John also lectures and teaches, specialising in commissioned art from the early Renaissance to now, and has been a Visiting Lecturer at Royal College of Art since 2002.
