Marwell Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition

SNAP-happy nature lovers had better get clicking as a prestigious annual photo competition is launched.

Returning for its sixth consecutive year, the Marwell Wildlife Photographer of the Year looks to recognise the brightest and best of wildlife photography. The popular competition is open to professional, amateur, and young photographers alike.

This year’s top prize is an 8 day Estonia photography trip from Wildlife Worldwide worth £1,795 along with an annual subscription to Digital Photographer magazine.

Other prizes include a special day at the zoo incorporating a Junior Photographic Experience, annual memberships and camera equipment.

The competition has four categories and judges will assess striking entries that capture the essence of nature, exhibiting photographic excellence, high quality and great composition. The categories are native wildlife (flora and fauna native or resident in the British Isles), cute and funny (Mother Nature at her cutest or most amusing), Marwell Wildlife residents and Marwell Wildlife endangered – specifically classified by IUCN as either endangered or critically endangered.

Marwell is delighted to announce that Winchester based wildlife travel specialists Wildlife Worldwide are again sponsoring the popular competition.

As well as providing some fantastic prizes, Wildlife Worldwide have collaborated with Beyond Carbonto sponsor this year’s competition to the tune of £1,000 to help Marwell’s conservation work with Grevy’s zebra in Africa. Beyond Carbon helps to protect the world’s threatened environments, its wildlife and indigenous people by connecting businesses with outstanding projects in the UK and overseas.

Wildlife Worldwide are delighted to channel much of their charitable funding through Beyond Carbon and thereby ensure that the projects they help to fund are well researched and fully sustainable.

These funds will contribute towards Marwell’s field work in Kenya's arid northern rangelands to promote conservation awareness, as well as training workshops for newly recruited community scouts in data-collection methods and wildlife monitoring. This work is ultimately aimed at providing an overarching framework for community-based conservation of Grevy's zebra as a flagship species, and wildlife conservation in general, in areas which have not previously been assessed or included in Kenya's national Grevy’s zebra conservation and management strategies.

Judges for this year’s competition include:

Laura Barwick, Image Consultant for BBC Natural History Unit.
Jason Brown, multi-international award winning wildlife photographer
Chris Breen, Managing Director - Wildlife Worldwide
Amy Squibb, Editor - Digital Photographer Magazine

Entry to the competition costs £10 for adults and is FREE for juniors. This year, photographers can enter twice and up to 10 images.
