The Power of Protest - A Unique Photographic Collection Captures the Faces of the Revolution in Egypt.
Messages From Tahrir is a new book of photography collected by Karima Khalil, a doctor living in Egypt who witnessed first hand the uprisings in Tahrir Square in Egypt which lead to one of the most formative events of the “Arab Spring”. In a collection of her own photogtraphy, as well as the images of 36 other photographers, the book gives a unique, intimate and powerful account of the uprising which led to the overthrow of President Hosni Mubarak, focusing purely on the signs held up by the protestors.
Karima Khalil will be in conversation with writer and broadcaster Anthony Sattin on Tuesday 22 November at the Nour Festival at Leighton House. (www.nourfestival.co.uk).
Interest points:
According to Khalil, these images are as powerful – and relevant - today as the moment they were taken. The population is still waiting for the changes to happen. The atmosphere is still tense. The messages scrawled months ago still resonate today.
The other photographers in the book were found using social media sites such as Twitter, Facebook and Flickr – which echos the way social media played a pivitol role in coordinating and rallying protesters in the uprising.
The book is the only photographic compilation of the events to focus purely on the messages scrawled on paper, clothing and objects used by the protesters during the revolutionary demonstrations.
Published first in June 2011 the first two editions have already sold out. A third edition is going to press for this autumn.
