In time for Mother’s Day comes MOTHERS AND CHILDREN (National Geographic Books, ISBN 978-1-4262-0425-8, March 17, 2009, $20 hardcover), a stunning gift book that captures the touching bond between mothers and their children, in global photographs that could only come from National Geographic.

Often, words cannot adequately explain the emotions that make up the parent/child relationship, but a single photograph can speak volumes. The baby strapped to her mother’s bosom as she works the fields. The mom watching her child on a playground. The woman in church, trying not to notice that her child has fallen asleep. In these and other moving images, the amazing bond between mother and child is evident.

World-famous contributors Annie Griffiths Belt, Sam Abell, Jodi Cobb, Joel Sartore and more reveal the whimsical and poignant emotion of the maternal relationship, caught on camera in over 65 beautiful photographs from around the world. MOTHERS AND CHILDREN celebrates a fascinating array of shared moments of love and togetherness as it celebrates the lives of families at work, at play and at home. An introduction from mother and writer Lynne Perri sets the stage for the visual journey through the hearts and homes of mothers everywhere. Lyrical essays follow, co-written by Craig Wilson, about work, play and home life.

In addition to its value as a collection of emotionally rich photographs, MOTHERS AND CHILDREN is destined to be a perennial gift book and will find wide appeal as a unique and meaningful gift for Mother’s Day, birthdays and other special occasions.

Lynne Perri is a journalist-in-residence and a teacher on presidential election and visual strategies at American University. She is a former deputy managing editor for graphics and photography at USA Today. Craig Wilson has been a feature writer at USA Today’s “The Final Word” for the past 12 years. He’s the author of “It’s the Little Things: An Appreciation of Life’s Simple Pleasures,” a collection of his columns.
