HD DSLR Workshops Press Release

Internationally-acclaimed cinematographer Gale Tattersall announces his next series of master class workshops on Canon HD DSLR Cameras.  Emmy and ASC-nominated Gale Tattersall has photographed such varied work as The Commitments, Ghost Ship, Pushing Tin, Wild Orchid, Tank Girl, From The Earth to The Moon, and The Addams Family.  He is currently the director of photography for HOUSE, which airs Monday nights on FOX.

Recent breakthroughs in digital technology have allowed the use of digital SLR cameras (and in particular the Canon 5D Mark II, 7D, and 1D Mark IV) to shoot professional-quality high definition 1080p video.  For the first time in history, an entire episode of network television was filmed with handheld digital SLR cameras.  On May 17, 2010 the Season 6 finale of HOUSE aired to international critical praise, reaching 11 million Americans and 80 million people in 66 countries worldwide.  Entertainment Weekly (EW) called the episode “ginormous in scope” and Screenrant.com ‘s review raved “a beautiful masterpiece.”  A firm supporter of innovative technologies, director of photography Gale Tattersall used low-cost Canon 5D Mark II cameras to shoot the entire episode, and has continued to use the cameras regularly in Season 7.

Now, Tattersall has decided to share his knowledge and techniques with filmmakers, students, and budding artists in a series of live workshops.  HD DSLR Workshops are live master classes taught by Gale Tattersall on Canon digital single-lens reflex (DSLR) cameras.  The workshops will specifically focus on the high-definition (HD) video capabilities of the cameras, and their use for film production.  Although centered around the Canon 5D Mark II (which Gale uses every day on HOUSE), the workshops will be of use to anyone with an interest in HD DSLR cameras, and digital film production in general.  They are suited for visually-oriented individuals who are taking the first step in HD digital production, as well as those re-inventing their career opportunities. Tattersall, along with other industry professionals and specialists, promise to impart all the knowledge they have in taking a DSLR camera and shooting the highest quality footage. HDSLR Workshops cover everything from full use of the cameras and accessories, lighting techniques, and artistry in a very much hand-on experience. Learn from the very professionals who are re-inventing cinema, television, and visual media through this cutting-edge technology.

Tattersall commented, “I can honestly say that the [Canon] 5D has revolutionized the business. You can now shoot a network tv show with a camera you can get at your local retail store for $2,500.  It’s a tool that allows anybody to do almost anything that renowned filmmakers can accomplish, but at a fraction of the price.”

Workshop Level One - Spread over three Sundays, each of the three days will revolve around a different aspect of the cinematographic process, both the technical and creative sides of using these new digital tools.  5D Mark II cameras will be available for students to experience hands-on, as well as all the equipment and gear that Gale uses regularly on House.  Students can expect to learn how to use the basic and advanced functions of the camera, lighting, shooting, and the filmmaking process from concept to creation.  The final class will offer students the chance to take the concepts and skills they have learned over the month and create a collaborative short film.

Dates:
January 09, 16, & 23 / 2010
February 13, 20, & 27 / 2010
March 13, 20, & 27 / 2010
April 10, 17, & 24 / 2010

Coming this summer Gale will announce his Level Two workshops. The content of these classes will be posted shortly.

HD DSLR Workshops also plan a series of five day field trips where students will get the chance to work closely with Gale shooting a documentary film. It is planned to stay under canvas with all facilities. This will not only be an amazing learning period but also a life adventure. Photographers, film makers, and other artists will live together during this experience, talk image creativity over a camp fire, in a chance to bond and learn with each other.
This will be a life and learning experience rolled into one.
