New Photography Courses in East Sussex

Brighton-based photographer and teacher Jerry Lebens has announced two new photography courses for September 2011. The first one, Beyond Auto: Getting more from your DSLR camera (£80), is targeted at beginners and comprises four evening classes held on 5, 12, 19 and 26 September. The second one is a one-day studio lighting workshop entitled, Let there be light (£150), taking place on Sunday. 25 September. Both courses will be held in The Gallery, Lewesiana, 85 High Street, Lewes, East Sussex BN7 1XN.

What’s covered - Beyond Auto course:
Through a carefully structured series of talks, demonstrations and exercises, students will develop an understanding of the fundamentals that underlie all photographic images: ISO, shutter speed and aperture. At the end they will have the tools to develop their own unique photographic style and be able to create images using manual camera controls.
· Introduction to ISO, shutter speeds, aperture and depth of field
· Image composition, line, tone and texture
· How to freeze and blur action
· Getting colour rendition right
· Saving images: file formats
· Essential Photoshop skills.
What’s covered - Studio lighting course:
· Pros and cons of artificial lighting: tungsten vs flash
· Health and safety issues regarding artificial lighting
· How to build a studio image from first principles
· Modelling with light
· How to work effectively with line/tone/texture
· Diffusion reflection and contrast
· Single and multiple light sets
· Combining artificial light and daylight.
Who is the teacher:
Based in Brighton, Jerry Lebens is an internationally recognised photographer, teacher and writer with 30 years’ experience. His work has featured in magazines including Digital Photographer, Professional Photographer and on TV. Jerry was also a freelance feature writer for both Black and White Photography and Outdoor Photography magazines for over six years..
An expert in both film-based and digital photography, Jerry regularly conducts workshops on behalf of Harman Technology - the manufacturers of both Ilford films and papers and Harman inkjet papers. He is also a Permajet Ambassador.
Jerry is also a fully qualified teacher. He spent ten years working as a Design Technology teacher in a school for the deaf and he now runs courses and provides individual tuition in all aspects of photography. www.jerrylebens.com.
