The New York Times Photo Archives Launches Web Site for One of World’s Largest and Most Comprehensive Photo Collections; WWW.NYTIMES.COM/PHOTOARCHIVES Available to Design Community and Corporations

NEW YORK—(BUSINESS WIRE) - Oct. 8, 2004 - The New York Times Photo Archives announced today the launch of a Web site, www.nytimes.com/photoarchives, created in response to the growing demand from corporations and the design community for The Times’s historic photographs.

“We are excited to bring this historic photographic collection to the design industry,” said Jim Mones, director, The New York Times Photo Archives. “In addition to opening our photo archives, we are presenting versatile design applications that give designers, architects and art consultants a world of new possibilities. Our easy-to-use site offers an unprecedented opportunity to integrate significant moments in history with their designs.”

The new site evolved from the popularity of the hand-printed, framed photographs featured on The New York Times’s online store. Now www.nytimes.com/photoarchives extends the reach of this classic collection to design possibilities that include custom wall murals, acrylic room dividers, aluminum and copper prints, stretched canvases, fabric backdrops and carpets. The applications allow designers to integrate iconic photographs seamlessly within any space, to transform offices, hotels, homes, atriums, hallways and lobbies into powerful visual environments. Archived in their original format, these photographs can be reproduced in extremely large sizes without compromising image quality.

The new site also features classic black-and-white photographs, hand-printed in sizes ranging from 11"x14” to 50"x70” and are available unframed or framed. Visitors to the site can also view examples of how memorable photos can be enlarged to create unique office environments.

The New York Times Photo Archives is one of the largest and most comprehensive photo collections in the world, with more than seven million photographs from as early as 150 years ago. For nearly a century, images from the Photo Archives were used almost exclusively in the news pages of The New York Times. Classic photos - on almost every subject, from world events, sports and transportation to science, industry, lifestyles, landmarks and cities - are available to the public through the Photo Archives. The images dramatize the power of photography to inform, delight, shock and inspire, and remind us how profoundly our perceptions are shaped by the medium.

The New York Times online store (www.nytstore.com) provides designers and consumers in general with a virtual store of more than 1,200 products imprinted with the well-known New York Times brand. It includes hundreds of historic black-and-white photographs, plus contemporary color images. The online store, created in 1999, was relaunched in 2002 with an expanded selection of exclusive New York Times merchandise and improved tools and navigation features. An enhanced search function made the shopping experience quick, easy and secure. Merchandise on the site is organized into intuitive categories, including photographs, books, calendars, front pages, cards, clothing and videos.
