Nikon AF-S Nikkor 24-70mm f/2.8E ED VR

The AF-S Nikkor 24-70mm f/2.8E ED VR is Nikon's first full-frame professional standard zoom with vibration reduction and electromagnetic aperture control. Offering up to four stops of image stabilisation, the Nikon AF-S Nikkor 24-70mm f/2.8E ED VR is constructed of 20 elements arranged in 16 groups - including a number of aspherical and ED glass elements as well as a new ASP/ED element - and features an iris diaphragm with 9 rounded aperture blades. Nikon's exclusive nano crystal coating is also employed to reduce flare and ghosting. The lens has a minimum focus distance of 38cm and a maximum reproduction ratio of 1:3.6, and is equipped with a Silent Wave Motor for fast and quiet auto focus. Just like its predecessor, the new lens is gasketed and sealed to provide a degree of protection against the elements. The AF-S Nikkor 24-70mm f/2.8E ED VR lens will become available later this month, at an MSRP of £1,849.99 / €2,499.00 /$2,399.95.

Equipped with a built-in VR mechanism, the first NIKKOR lens for which an aspherical ED glass element has been adopted
TOKYO - Nikon Corporation is pleased to announce the release of the AF-S NIKKOR 24-70mm f/2.8E ED VR, a standard zoom lens compatible with Nikon FX-format digital SLR cameras.
The AF-S NIKKOR 24-70mm f/2.8E ED VR is an approximately 2.9x standard zoom lens that supports the 24-70 mm*1 range of focal lengths with a maximum aperture of f/2.8. Adoption of the combination of one aspherical ED glass element, a first for NIKKOR lenses, aspherical lens elements, ED glass elements, a HRI(High Refractive Index) lens element, and Nano Crystal Coat makes this lens one that boasts superior optical performance with suppression of ghost and chromatic aberration, as well as sharp, clear rendering all the way to the edges of the frame. The AF-S NIKKOR 24-70mm f/2.8E ED VR allows users to enjoy even better resolution and softer, more natural blur characteristics than did the previous AF-S NIKKOR 24-70mm f/2.8G ED.
In addition, it is equipped with a vibration reduction (VR) mechanism for camera shake compensation equivalent to a 4.0-stop*2 increase in shutter speed. The AF-S NIKKOR 24-70mm f/2.8E ED VR is a high-performance standard zoom lens that combines superior resolution and natural blur characteristics with excellent strength and durability.
*1When used with a DX-format digital SLR camera, the effective angles of view are equivalent to those of a lens with focal lengths of 36-105 mm in 35mm [135] format.
*2When a digital SLR camera equipped with a full-size image sensor is used. Measured with the zoom lens at the maximum telephoto position.
Other Features
- Equipped with fast, very precise AF that immediately captures the intended subject, and an electromagnetic diaphragm that achieves stable exposure control with high-speed continuous shooting
- Adoption of a barrel design that enables superior operation and a firm and steady hold
- In addition to its superior strength and durability, adoption of fluorine coat, which effectively repels water and oils, on the outer surfaces of the extreme front and rear lens elements makes cleaning the lens easier even when it does get dirty
Nikon UK Press Release
Faster. Stronger. Steadier. Meet the all-new AF-S NIKKOR 24-70mm f/2.8E ED VR
London, UK, 4th August 2015: Nikon updates its ‘holy trinity’ of fast zoom lenses with the brand new AF-S NIKKOR 24-70mm f/2.8E ED VR. The beneficiary of a complete overhaul, the most widely used professional zoom lens in the NIKKOR line-up is now faster, stronger, and steadier than ever.
The addition of Nikon’s impressive Vibration Reduction (VR), a brand new optical construction and a more sturdy build breathe new life into this renowned lens.
Edward Allinson, Junior Product Manager for Lenses & Accessories at Nikon UK says: “The 24-70mm is a new and improved update to the already successful 24-70mm f/2.8G. Nikon has improved every aspect of this legendary lens in terms of image quality, construction, build and speed, as well as adding more stability with VR, minimising camera shake and allowing photographers to shoot at slower shutter speeds. This is an exceptional lens built to keep up with the demands of the professional photographer.
Advancing a legend
Although the current 24-70mm (introduced with the Nikon D3 in 2007) is still widely acclaimed, the new incarnation of this lens takes performance to another level. In a first for any NIKKOR lens, the new optical design includes an aspherical ED glass element. Developed to combat chromatic aberrations and coma, this new element reduces light fall-off and enables uncompromised resolution at the peripheries. The brand new VR system minimises camera shake and lets you shoot at shutter speeds up to four stops slower.1 AF is also improved thanks to Nikon’s exclusive Silent Wave Motor (SWM), which is up to 1.5 times faster than the SWM used in the 24-70mm f/2.8G. The addition of an electromagnetic diaphragm enables consistent, more precise exposures during high-speed bursts, reducing the risk of accidental damage that can be associated with mechanical lever mechanisms.
Workhorse
Nikon’s new 24-70mm lens is ready to withstand the punishment that comes with years of daily professional use. While the optical design is complex, with 20 elements in 16 groups and Nano Crystal Coat, Nikon has strengthened the construction of this lens to create a tougher product. The included hood is a small but important improvement. Nikon listened to pro feedback and placed the release lock in a recess to prevent accidental removal. Naturally, the lens is fully weather sealed. A fluorine coating applied to the front and rear elements of the lens actively repels water, dust, and dirt without compromising image quality. And the coating makes it easier to clean the glass without damaging the surface.
