NTU Photography Masterclass

The official artist for this year’s general election will provide a guest lecture and workshop as part of a photography masterclass being offered at Nottingham Trent University. Simon Roberts, who was commissioned by the House of Commons to produce a series of artworks documenting the election, will join other internationally-renowned photographers for the course, which runs from 6-10 September.

The course, being run from the University’s Bonington building, is aimed at enthusiasts and professionals and will focus on black and white landscape photography through the medium of the fine art print. The schedule will include portfolio advice, seminar presentations, darkroom techniques, one-to-one and group tutorials by landscape photographers, and guest lectures on landscape and documentary photography.

Simon Roberts’ photographs have been exhibited widely with recent shows at the Museum of Contemporary Photography in Chicago and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Shanghai. After spending a year in Russia taking pictures of what would form his Motherland exhibition, he sought his attachment to England which came in We English. Combinations of both works were on show in Nottingham Trent University’s Bonington Gallery earlier this year.

He was commissioned by the Speaker’s Advisory Committee on Works of Art to document election campaigning activity in the run-up to polling day and was given special access to the campaign trail. His work has been included in the House of Commons’ Parliamentary Art Collection.

John Davies, whose first work in the 1970s was landscape studies of rural Britain, will also provide guest lectures and workshops. In 1981 John Davies began an ongoing documentation of urban Britain, looking at the changing industrial and post-industrial landscape. His latest book - The British Landscape - was published in 2006 and he was shortlisted for the Deutsche Borse Photography Award in 2008.

His photographs have been widely exhibited, including at the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Pompidou Centre, Paris; and the Royal Academy of Art and the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.

Hugh Hamilton, a senior lecturer in photography in Nottingham Trent University’s School of Art and Design, said: “This masterclass is a rare opportunity for photographers who wish to work in contemporary landscape photography, to develop their work further. Also, the class celebrates the large format black and white darkroom thus giving practitioners the chance to engage with the real photographic object - the silver based print.

“In essence, this is about moving away from ‘fast food’ digital photography towards slow ‘gourmet-style’ picture-making. To make this transition, participants will work with two of the best contemporary landscape photographer artists, giving a true masterclass experience.”
