Ilex has released the first issue of Photographer’s i Magazine for the Apple iPad.  Editor Marti Saltzman said “Photographer’s i is not like any other photography magazine because it starts from a different premise; our concern is with the art of image making.” Articles come to life with videos, audio recordings, and interactive tutorials. The free taster issue, available now on iTunes, includes richly illustrated thoughtful, practical advice from the likes of Magnum’s Abbas, Steve Simon, and other professional photographers.

Pick up any photography magazine and you’d be forgiven for thinking it was a pastime for millionaires, with cameras that cost hundreds, lenses that can cost thousands, and a range of expensive gadgetry advertised all over the place, and it’s no secret that the editorial content shifts to suit the advertisers. When a few big publishers controlled the presses, that was how the world worked, but now British publisher Ilex have taken advantage of the iPad to show the world there is another way.

Ilex scored a surprise big hit with their and Michael Freeman’s bestseller The Photographer’s Eye, a book for photographers that looked at the craft of composition rather than the gear, and have since sold over 700,000 copies in the series. Recognising that the iPad would allow them – and Freeman as Editor in Chief – to create a magazine appealing to the same people, sell it worldwide, and exorcise advertisements (even the free Taster issue is ad-free) but to include the work and thoughts of many of today’s greatest photographers, they dived straight in.

The result is “all manner of awesome”, in the words of leading photo author Haje Jan Kamps (yes, he really does talk like that), and includes richly illustrated thoughtful, practical advice from the likes of Magnum’s Abbas, Steve Simon, and more. With no print edition dragging them down, the nimble Photographer’s i Magazine team are able to include all manner of interactivity – including videos, audio clips and overlays, specialist photographer and author Bob Krist called it “the future”.

That said, they’re clear about their mission.
