THE ROYAL PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY ANNUAL AWARDS

ANNIE LEIBOVITZ TO BE PRESENTED WITH CENTENARY MEDAL and Honorary Fellowship AT THE ROYAL PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY’S ANNUAL AWARDS CEREMONY

ANNIE LEIBOVITZ will be presented with the Centenary Medal and Honorary Fellowship of The Royal Photographic Society (RPS) at The Society’s annual awards ceremony on 19th November 2009. The event, which takes place at The Royal Society, London, recognises those who have made outstanding contributions to the art of science and photography. Annie Leibovitz joins the distinguished list of globally respected photographers, including Sebastião Salgado, Cornell Capa, David Bailey and Don McCullin, who have received this prestigious accolade.

2009 also marks the 10th anniversary of The Society’s Terence Donovan Award, which is given in memory of the late Terence Donovan, with the generous co-operation of Mr Donovan’s widow, Diana. This year’s winner is Mark Edwards, whose latest project is Hard Rain, a book and photographic exhibition in collaboration with Bob Dylan. It was launched to huge public and critical acclaim, attracting the support and endorsement of political and environmental leaders across the world.

New for 2009 is The Royal Photographic Society Award for Outstanding Services to Photography. This Award recognises major sustained, outstanding and influential contributions to the advancement of photography and/or imaging in their widest meanings, and its first recipient will be Dewi Lewis of Dewi Lewis Publishing. Mr Lewis has been an Honorary Fellow of The Society since 2004.

Bryce E Bayer, best known for the Bayer colour filter array used in digital cameras, will be awarded this year’s Progress Medal with Honorary Fellowship. Honorary Fellowship recipients include Scottish born photojournalist Harry Benson CBE, who has photographed 11 American presidents from Eisenhower to Obama; Dorothy Bohm, who is known for her carefully observed photographs of London and Paris; and Paul Graham, who was among the first photographers to unite contemporary colour photography with the classic genre of social documentary, and who is the winner of the Deutsche Börse Photography Prize in 2009.

The RPS Postgraduate Bursary, which was introduced last year, will be awarded to James Morgan, studying for an MA in Photojournalism and Documentary Photography at the London College of Communication.

The Vic Odden Award, recognising notable achievement in the art of photography by a British photographer aged 35 years or under, will be presented to James Mollison; and the Hood Medal will be received by François Hébel, Director of Les Rencontres d’Arles, France’s premier international festival of photography, which celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2009.
