RPS Announces Bursaries

The Royal Photographic Society (RPS) has announced a series of bursaries to support both young and established photographers and film makers in realising photography projects. These include the RPS Society Events Bursary, the Joan Wakelin Bursary, the Shoer Film Award, the Postgraduate Bursary and two Environmental Awareness bursaries. “The RPS bursaries are designed to help photographers to realise projects that would not happen otherwise, says Michael Pritchard, Director General of The Royal Photographic Society. "Past recipients have gone on to establish a career in photography and have acknowledged the importance of the support of the RPS. We look forward to this year’s recipients producing some great and important work."

The Royal Photographic Society has announced a series of bursaries to support both young and established photographers and film makers in realising photography projects. Alongside the funding, the recipients receive support and exposure to a wider audience via the RPS Journal, RPS website and many other media platforms, including the Guardian for winners of the Joan Wakelin Bursary. Closing dates are in June and July.

Environmental Awareness Project Funding - £6,000
The Royal Photographic Society in partnership with The Photographic Angle is offering two 1-year bursaries to support a photographic project that will promote environmental awareness. The bursaries will provide £3000 each to assist with travel expenses, photographic equipment and other project-related costs. The two awards are available for applicants aged between 16-25 and 26 years and over.
Postgraduate Bursary - £3,500
To support postgraduate students undertaking photographic research or studying Masters courses in Photography. Open to UK and overseas students.
Joan Wakelin Bursary - £2,000
The Joan Wakelin Bursary offers photographers £2,000 and the chance to have their work published in the Guardian and the RPS Journal. The Bursary, administered by the Guardian and The Royal Photographic Society, is awarded to the photographer who presents the best proposal for a photographic essay on an overseas social documentary issue. Submission is open to all, with no restriction on age or qualification.
RPS Society Events Bursary - Various
Applications can be made all year round. Theses bursaries are to enable young photographers to attend selected Society Regional and Group events that they would not normally be able to afford. Please approach the RPS Regional Organiser in your area or the area the event is due to be held in. This information can be found on the RPS website under Chapters and Regions.
Short Film Award - £1,500 and £1,000
The RPS in association with DepicT! is offering two awards, a contribution to the overall prize for best short film and a special prize for best cinematography.
