Shipwrecked Mariners’ Society on the lookout for the Ultimate Sea View
A sea view photography competition, run by one of the UK’s oldest maritime charities, is still on the hunt for the UK’s ultimate sea view as the deadline looms.
The Shipwrecked Mariners’ Society, which provides financial support to retired seafarers in need, or to those unable to continue working at sea as a result of injury or illness, is encouraging entries to the competition which is on the lookout for photos encapsulating the UK’s love of and reliance on the sea.
Having already seen a wave of entries, the competition, which is in its third year, will be judged on the Cutty Sark in London, by a prestigious panel of media and maritime experts including the head of pictures at The Independent, Sophie Batterbury, the editor of Amateur Photographer, Nigel Atherton, the editor of Discover Britain Magazine, Nancy Alsop, and the chief executive of the Shipwrecked Mariners’ Society, Commodore Malcolm Williams.
The prize, donated by P&O Ferries, will be a five-day return crossing on their Dover to Calais route for a car or caravan and up to nine passengers. Runners up will also receive prizes form the society.
Running from the Charity’s website, www.shipwreckedmariners.org.uk, and across social media, participants are being encouraged to send in their photographs of what they believe best encapsulates Britain’s coast, seafarers and the sea; whether in relation to the work of fishermen, merchant mariners, or wildlife, seascapes - anything which shows and celebrates our intimate connection with, and reliance on the sea and seafarers.
The competition was launched with an exhibition of last year’s winning images at the Royal Alfred Seafarers’ Society care home in Surrey, and was visited by Societies patron, HRH The Princess Royal and comedian Tim Vine. A video of the event can be viewed on the Shipwrecked Mariners’ Society website.
Commodore Williams said: “Since the launch of the competition we have already received an excellent response with entries again being of a very high standard. With images portraying all aspects of UK’s love for, connection with and reliance on the sea, this year’s competition is certainly going to be a very tough one to judge!”
The Shipwrecked Mariners’ Society gives financial support to fishermen, mariners and their dependants who are suffering hardship. In the last year the organisation handled 612 new applications for assistance and distributed £1.4million across 2,200 cases of need.
The deadline for entries to the competition is the 7 August 2015.
