ILFORD PHOTO SPONSORS TOURING LARRY HERMAN EXHIBITION

Leading monochrome specialist continues ‘Defend the Darkroom’ campaign

The appearance by ILFORD PHOTO at this year’s FOCUS ON IMAGING was a great success, not only for the company but also for Larry Herman. A mini exhibition of the renowned photographer’s work was sponsored by the specialist monochrome brand of HARMAN technology Limited and was viewable on its own dedicated stand. Now, following extensive positive feedback from many who attended Europe’s largest imaging event, ILFORD PHOTO has announced plans to help take the exhibition on a national tour. The tour will commence in autumn and will appear at a number of specially selected colleges and galleries across the UK.

Larry, whose prints can be found in many public and private collections, is perhaps one of the world’s most respected social photographers. His work enjoys international acclaim and has led to him winning several awards as well as grants from the Ford Foundation and the International Fund for Concerned Photography in New York. He was also a finalist in the International Fund for Documentary Photography, San Francisco.

This particular exhibition is entitled ‘Waged London’ and represents two years of Larry’s work. The shots document and acknowledge the working lives of millions, who, through their often low-paid labour in areas such as healthcare, transportation, manufacturing and tourism, underpin the entire economy of the Capital.

Speaking of the exhibition, Larry said: “I am genuinely excited by the chance to exhibit some of my work in progress from Waged London to students across the UK. It is always an honour to help educate and inspire a new generation of young and creative minds who, potentially, could become the great photographers of tomorrow. The opportunity to showcase true silver halide bprints to an audience brought up in a digital age is also great news - not just for me, but for the wider medium of analogue photography.”

Meanwhile, Howard Hopwood, Marketing Director for ILFORD PHOTO, added: “We are delighted to be supporting Larry and our involvement in his touring exhibition is all part and parcel of our wider ‘Defend the Darkroom’ campaign.”

In today’s increasingly digital age, Defend the Darkroom aims to demonstrate that there is still a vital place for analogue photography. As most photo-educators will tell you, it is essential for students to get to grips with analogue cameras as it is the best means of developing an understanding of the basics of photography – such as the importance of film speed and aperture settings. It also facilitates the creation of better digital images by helping students to increase their awareness of the effects of shadow, light and tone.

Howard continues: “The work featured in Waged London illustrates how combining these skills can lead to poignant, thought-provoking and stimulating shots. We hope the touring exhibition will be well received.”
