Sundroid is a sun and moon prediction app for Android phones and tablets. Capable of predicting the position of the sun (and the moon) in the sky for any location at any date / time, Sundroid Pro ($2.99 /  £1.99 €2.39) helps photographers choose the best timing and location for a photo, predict areas of light and shadow, or capture interesting and unusual alignments of the sun and moon with the subject. The app also has a free version, which can calculate sunrise, sunset, moonrise and moonset times and the phases of the moon but lacks the sun-and-moon tracking functionality of the Pro version.

Smartphone app helps outdoor photography planning

When planning an outdoor photo or video shoot, it’s essential to know where the sun and moon will be in order to choose a perfect location, get the best possible lighting, and frame spectacular photos. Software that predicts the position of the sun and moon can be as vital a part of the photographer’s kit as quality lenses and filters, and thanks to smartphones it’s now easy to have this software to hand even in remote locations.

Sundroid, the most popular sun and moon prediction app for Android phones and tablets, has now been downloaded over 250,000 times from the Android Market. Since its first release, Sundroid has been developed with help and feedback from photographers worldwide.

Sundroid includes alarms that sound a chosen period before sunrise, sunset, or any other daily event, and update automatically each day.

The alarm can be a traditional alarm clock with sound and vibration, or a simple notification similar to an email or SMS alert. This feature makes it easy to time a shoot for when the light will be best.

Sundroid also features a sun and moon tracker, which shows their positions in the sky for any location at any date and time. With this information, a photographer can choose the best timing and location for a photo, predict areas of light and shadow, or capture interesting and unusual alignments of the sun and moon with the subject.

Two versions of this app are available from the Android Market. Sundroid Free calculates sunrise, sunset, moonrise, and moonset times and the phase of the moon. Sundroid Pro adds golden hours, blue hours, twilight times, the sun and moon tracker, alarms, and major events such as eclipses, solstices and equinoxes. Sundroid Free includes demos of all these features.
