Travel Photographer of the Year journeys back to London

Award-winning travel images go on show in an outstanding, free to view, exhibition at Britain's Royal Geographical Society (with IBG) this summer, as Travel Photographer of the Year returns to London and stages its hugely popular annual display of the latest winning shots.

The Travel Photographer of the Year (TPOTY) exhibition is a firm favourite on the calendar of tourists and London residents alike, with the awards’ most recent winning images unveiled each year to bustling crowds.

This year’s event features the entries that took top honours in the 2014 awards, in which amateur and professional photographers from over 100 countries competed. Stretching from the Society’s glass-sided Pavilion, out into the terrace and down into the garden, it runs from Friday July 24th to Saturday, September 5th. The exhibition is free to visit and is open from 10am to 5pm Sunday to Thursday and 10am to 7pm Friday and Saturday.

From atmospheric views of icy geysers with burning hearts, a polar bear guarding the bloody carcass of its seal kill, ethereal, dead trees in the Namibian fog and divers exploring mysterious underwater worlds, to elegant, intimate portraits of Himba tribeswomen, cyclists tackling steep inclines in dramatic Norwegian landscapes and the camaraderie of life in an elderly people’s community in China, the exhibited images showcase vastly differing aspects of life on this planet. It is the perfect inspiration for anyone considering entering this year’s TPOTY competition, entries for which are open until October 1st.

The overall winner of the 2014 TPOTY awards, British photographer Philip Lee Harvey, also has a private showcase of his work in the exhibition, bringing a further range of superb, contemporary travel images for visitors to enjoy.

With prints produced by Genesis Imaging, and specialist lighting from Direct Photographic, this wonderful collection of award-winning photography will be showcased to its very best advantage. The exhibition also features the winning short films from the 2014 TPOTY awards, led by Rufus Blackwell’s timelapse video that compresses Kumbh Mela – the largest gathering of people in the world – into just two minutes, with 80,000 individual images combined to exhilarating effect.

Visitors can take home a piece of the exhibition in the form of postcards or greetings cards, or in Journey Seven, the latest book from Travel Photographer of the Year, which goes on sale for the first time in the gallery shop.  There is also a ‘pop-up’ café in the garden, allowing visitors to enjoy drinks and snacks surrounded by glorious images in a historic location just a few hundred yards from London’s museum quarter off Exhibition Road.

In addition, visitors have the chance to vote for their favourite image, with the opportunity to win a magnificent British handmade leather travel bag, worth £690, from StaaG, plus a luxury StaaG polo shirt of their choice from any of the collections and a bundle of TPOTY goodies.

During the exhibition, Travel Photographer of the Year will be staging a number of ‘Enchanted Evenings’ at the gallery. A new and very popular innovation introduced at last year’s Royal Geographical Society exhibition, these are ticketed events, costing £8 to include a glass of wine, or £15 to also include a copy of Journey Seven. Enchanted Evening dates can be found – and tickets booked - on www.tpoty.com. It is not necessary to book tickets for day visits to the exhibition.

Travel Photographer of the Year is sponsored by Direct Photographic, Genesis Imaging, Plastic Sandwich, Photo Iconic, Railbookers and StaaG.
